    Iron Will - Joel McNeely

NOBODY writes film music like this any more. Which is such a pity, because I could listen to this sort of thing all day long.

A gorgeous little sweet score. A bit undermixed in the film, unfortunately.

Next up... The Age of Conan (magnificent video game score, actually).

I also played this yesterday. It has really opened my eyes to Mychael Danna. He's very good.

I disagree that NOBODY writes like this any more. Just listen to Talgorn's Olympiques score. However, it is true that this sort of style isn't as prevalent as it use to be.

Maybe, but it doesn't get released.

At the risk of inflaming hatred and condemnation, I've never quite got Talgorn. I thought that Asterix score was horrible.

I listened to it once, but admittedly I didn't feel the need to return to it. That's not to say I think it's a bad score, more to do with my attention span

I guess that's about what I thought too. I did try two or three listens to try to see what everyone else does, but I couldn't.
  1. Certainly just because it's written like John Williams would write it doesn't alone make it great for everyone. You have to be into fanfare-heavy adventure scoring with a comic bent to go for it. While I don't enjoy it a great deal save on very rare occasions, I think it's wonderfully done.

Absolutely he does. There are many examples on his web site that showcase that type of flare in his recent work. Check out his beautiful End Credit Suite from Tinkerbell: the Movie. Or some of the action material from Cinderella 3 and The Jungle Book 2. Or his underrated scores to Mulan 2 and Return to Neverland.

John Williams rip offs and all... this is a mighty score that you rarely hear anymore. Sweeping, thematic, majestic, full of life and heart! It delivers everything that made me fall in love with film music in the first place.

wave Erik you're making me foam at the mouth with your totally stunning mini-reviews... I don't have any Kunzel albums in my collection but that is about to change, I assure you cool . If these compilations are even half as good as you describe them, I think I'll go friggin' crazy when listening to them. Any others you can recommend? I'm always up for some good old classic scoring from the 70s and 80s.

At this UK shop I can buy them cheapish and if there's any other you can recommend, by all means...

I´d also recommend "Erich Kunzel / Cincinnati Pops Orchestra - Masters And Commanders" and "Erich Kunzel - Epics".
Anything with an orchestra or with a choir....at some point will reach you

I'm going to recommend to you some of the earlier recordings because the newer ones don't sound as good.

    Try these...

If you just want to sample some of Kunzel's work before purchasing full albums check out the 4CD called The Ultimate Movie Music Collection. It's the best of the best of Kunzel.

    As for full albums..

Star Tracks and Star Track II

Star Tracks featured music from the Star Wars Trilogy, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Close Enocunters, Star Trek The TV Series and E.T. All brilliantly performed. Star Tracks II is a more diverse album with highlighted selections from Cocoon, Star Trek I, II and IV. And you can't forget the fantastic performances of Lifeforce, Spacecamp and The Right Stuff.

Symphonic Star Trek gives you highlights from all the films up to Generations and all the TV shows.

Round Up and Happy Trails are killer western compilations. The performance of the Silverado End Credits on Round Up is almost better than the OST.

The Big Picture is really good. Solid performances all around featuring Batman Forever, ID4, CutThroat Island (the performance of the same piece on Masters and Commanders is AWFUL), Twister, Jumanji and more.

And the best Kuznel to come out recently was Three Choral Suites featuring music by Miklos Rozsa from Ben-Hur, Quo Vadis and King of Kings.

And if you have some Golden Age interest the two Hollywood's Greatest Hits albums will be of interest.

    And Star Tracks 1 & 2.
  3. Cool! I think I've got some ordering to do!!

Of all those Erik mentioned I've only heard Three Choral Suites, and I found it impressive, but I wasn't familiar with the music. Now imagine me listening to the music I know by heart, I think I'll probably faint !!!

Thanks for the comments guys. punk

The Afrika dude did a reasonable approximation, but it's nothing like as good as Iron Will. Debney does not generally write like this (Cutthroat Island comes closest but it's still not exactly like this; please don't mention Lair because it's more a series of rip-offs than something which just happens to be in a certain style) and Williams doesn't write much of anything.

    Huh?

People have been pretty much in agreement of that since its release! It's whether or not you find it to be an enjoyable series of rip-offs which is more to the point (which I do).
