Oh, and Martijn - Jamaica sounds awesome! You're probably there now, enjoying the hell out of it. Let us know when you come back. I've always been curious about the Caribbean.I am extremely serious. -

Sadly for me it was James who went.
I *am* thoroughly jealous, though.
Interesting experiences, Thor.
Africa has never been a draw for me (but then nor has Asia, and having visited Bali and Malaysia I'm starting to second guess my own preferences), but NgoroNgoro sounds like something else! (And I don't just mean the name

Ah, sorry, James it was!! Seemed like something you could do too, since you seem to enjoy a long-distance journey now and then.
Even though there were a few negative elements with the Tanzania experience, I still want to discover more of Africa, especially Kenya and South Africa. I wish Congo were an actually working country, because its nature seems very alluring...lots of jungles, mountains and stuff. And it's so vast!
I'll be staying away from North Africa for the time being, for obvious reasons.I am extremely serious. -

Thanks for the report Thor. It is damn expensive though!! Not yet for me I think. Aren't there cheaper options to stay? Hostels or cheap guest rooms? I can't believe it! We had some plans to go to Africa this year, same region too, but now I'm a bit less interested.
Ngorogorobongo sounds fantastic though!Kazoo -

Yes, there are cheaper alternatives, but even the guest houses are expensive as far as guest houses goes - especially considering that the average Tanzanian's day wage is $1. Deep, deep disconnect between regular and tourist prices. Check your Lonely Planet!
There are places and lodges where you can stay in a tent, but you would have to rent the space. You're not allowed to camp and hike inside the national parks (as far as I know).
Personally, I need a bit of comfort - especially when I'm travelling in countries with this kind of climate and bacteria culture. I can live without A/C once in a while, but I do at the very least need a fan. You're probably able to deal with that better than me, Bregt.I am extremely serious. -

Anywayz.
Sounds like a mixed bag Thor, the good and the bad always make for good travel related stories later on but aren't much fun when you're in the thick of it.
Being ill for days on end is a bummer when you have a tight schedule, in India I was ill on three seperate occasions lasting between 2-4 days and one of the instances was manageable with Imodium, but then I was in India for nearly 4 Months so it just added up to minor inconveniences.
I'd still like to go to Tanzania though going to the top of Kilimanjaro would be my prime objective......probably no surprise there for those of you who know me well

Tanzanian cuisine isn't much to brag about (from what I've heard, that goes for most African food in general). Then again, most of it was second-rate copies of Western foods, so hard to tell. It says something that the best meal we had there was an Indian restaurant on Zanzibar.
Really unfortunate, because they have great raw materials (like seafood on Zanzibar). They just don't know how to prepare it.
So beyond the goat thingie, we never got much impression of the local food. At the spice tour, we ate basmati rice and a vegetable stew of some sort. That seems to be fairly common.I am extremely serious. -

Great photos Thor. But it's a bit too remote for my liking. I like my home comforts.
It's good to see how different cultures live - it was a bit of a shock seeing how others live when I was in Tangier for a short time when I was at high school. We never got a true sense of what life was like as we were usually shepherded around in groups. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Tangier is a right den of ne'er do wells! Especially around the port, I felt I was in an Indy Jones movie, the only thing missing was a bloke with one eye and a monkey on his shoulder and I'm sure there'd have been one of them too if I'd stuck around long enough

They did have the fancy phones of course. I also gave them directions on how to get downtown taking the trolley. Since a friend came with me last night I had no way of giving them a ride or I would have. They really tried to understand the game I'll give them credit for that.listen to more classical music! -
