Actually on the plane I sat next to a lady who was a member of the Screen Actors Guild. She never got past doing small roles, working mainly in made for television movies. Her mother did a similiar thing for MGM in the 40's. It was an interesting way to pass the time.

Arrived home very late last night. The most exciting thing about the return trip was the discovery that Canada Dry, a beverage company, sold club soda in a can.

I'm planning to Interrail for 10 days in Germany at the end of this year, with a couple of friends, with the goal to celebrate new year in Berlin.

German members! Where do you live? Lets see if we can combine a passage in your city with a meeting!

Also, what are the scenic train routes in Germany, and where should we definitely stop?

Berlin is always worth a visit.

I'm living close to the Ruhr area. It's worth a visit if you are interested in industrial heritage.

Pawel, I arrived back from Warzsaw just now. Four wonderful days, and I'll add a report and pics soon!

I'm VERY sorry that I never got the chance to meet you - things just didn't fall into place with the program we had. But I loved the city, so I'll be back. smile

OK, here's a brief rundown of the trip:

The two main ingredients were drinking beer and eating....LOTS of both. I was very impressed by the wide selection of Polish beers, loved the darker ones in particular (but the names escape me at the moment). The wheat beer was pretty good too. The food was very much in the tradition of other countries in the region - LOTS of it, always sauerkraut, red cabbage or variations thereof. It's pretty obvious that Poland is an agricultural country.

We stayed at the Hilton, but when we went out, we either went to the old town or the area around the culture palace. Our destinations varied from small, local pubs to big discos to casinos to strip clubs, from local "bierstube"-like eating places to fancy restaurants a la Strauss. Overall, I was quite impressed by how "vibrant" the city was, even on Sundays and weekdays. And I still feel like I've only seen a fraction of the city (which is why I will be coming back). Do you go out a lot in Warszaw, Pawel? If so, can you attest to the fact that the city "lives" all year round?

Anyways, my body is pretty worn-down after four days in "gluttony", having had to repair with drinks and beer every day, so I'll have to relax now. I've put out some pics on facebook:

Thanks Thomas. Perhaps we can do part of the train route!

We chose München and Berlin (it's hard to find a not fully booked hostel!) and have a night or two at Garmisch-Partekirchen (or somewhere over there in the Alps to have some cold snow fun). Any ideas?

So I think that does exclude a meeting. But I see you live close to the border with The Netherlands, as do Ralph and Antineutrino. Perhaps that's a meeting worth once?

  8. Yeah, I live a couple of miles northwest of Duisburg, the most western city of the Ruhrgebiet. I live on the left side of the Rhein (actually, just some hundred metres from it). It is a nice countryside if you want to look for miles over flat land, full of fields, some trees, and the odd hill or forest here or there. So I doubt I have anything nice to add for the travel, BUT I know for certain that traveling along the Rhein, especially in the more southern regions of Germany, is breathtaking (though I think they changed the train route a couple of years ago to get a more straight railway for higher speed).

I've done that Rhein journey by train down to Munich, very beautiful ( included the quite startling sight of three F-104 Starfighters shooting past at a very low altitude ), sorry to hear they've changed the route.

  9. Well, I´m not sure. Maybe that route is still in use, you might have to ask for it. But you can always go by ship; that would be very special indeed.

Never heard of Muritz until your post.

Harz looks pretty, it looks like quite gentle hiking ( though looks can be deceiving ) and at this time of year your best equipment will be waterproofs.

Eventually, Munchen and the Bavarian Forest are too far/long from Berlin, and we have only 9 days, so we concentrated on something else.

We are Interrailing (mostly just bridging large distances) Northern-East Germany, with the Harz mountains and Berlin as our two main stops.

In Harz, we're going to visit Brocken, the highest mountain of Northern Germany (1200m) and make some longer walks in the region, including Bodetal (the tourism books call is a bit corny "the Grand Canyon of Germany") but well, it appears to have some awesome sights and the walks are not that hard (which is what we were aiming for, since we're not experienced AT ALL).

There'll hopefully be snow in Harz (Brocken should have definitely) and the small towns we are visiting hopefully have enough beer, glühwein and wine (and chocolate milk). We have only three full days in Berlin (three days is never enough for a citytrip) but I'm looking forward to it. Any recommendations on hidden spots in Berlin (or Harz)?

    Mmmmm! Nice girls cool

Some great pics Bregt, The weather looked pretty bleak at times in Harz, I kind of wish you'd taken my advice on doing the Swiss mountain rail journey ( which would have been truly spectacular ) but I guess time was an issue and anyway, it would have been the wrong time of year to do any hiking. Berlin looks great and I even recognised some parts from Mel's pics when she visited her dad last year.

p.s. Pic 6.....a steam train!? cool

Yeah, steam train indeed! Very cool. We never sat inside. wink

I didn't forget about the Swiss Mountain ride (I have a book of fabulous train travels, and it's in there!) Tim. We just couldn't do that, and then go to Berlin as well (since that was our first goal anyway). Harz is certainly a very good region to hike, but not the hikes you'd do I think. Although there's a six day walk from Northern Harz to the South covering the three different areas, including the mad Brocken!

Well, it sorta looks romantic, no? smile

But very nice to have them with us during the evenings. Hostels ca sometimes be very impersonal and you can get unlucky, but this time, we were very fortunate. They all studied in Europe (Germany, Bilboa and Poznan) and they clearly knew a lot to keep us amused. Though, they started calling me psycho by the end?

There was a deck outside each wagon. We were standing on these to have a good view, instead of sitting in the damping wagons. Not so cool was the tunnel suddenly: surrounded by smoke! biggrin
