NP : SECRET STORY - Pat Metheny Group
Melodic, tuneful, at times orchestral, an absolutely fantastic album and one I've never tired of.
Ever heard any Metheny Tom?On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

London Symphony -- Ralph Vaughn Williams
It's been a RVW day for me today; I've listened to his symphonies 2-7 (will probably listen to the rest tomorrow, if I'm still in the mood).
What glorious music.
All I have right now is the Slatkin boxset, which has all nine symphonies and assortment of shorter pieces. Anyone care to recommend where to go next? -

Fantastic taste you have Red, RVW is my very favourite composer
I have loads of versions of RVW but have not heard any of Slatkin's recordings.
All of Sir Adrian Boult's recordings are excellent but of course come before the digital age, same goes for Andre Previn, of more recent, modern recordings I would go for Bernard Haitink but Richard Hickox whose recordings are the most recent and recorded mostly in the 00's are very good too, particularly his award winning recording of Symphony # 2, I also love Vernon Handley's recordings.
I'm surprised to see there is no The Lark Ascending or The Wasps Overture on the Slatkin set, two of RVW's most popular works. I would also seriously rcommend Job : A Masque For Dancing which is a fabulous purely orchestral work.
How about you Tom, what's your recommendations? On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

Most of my RVW is on Naxos which I enjoy. The other suggestion is the three volume set of his film music that was released on Chandos.

I wasn't impressed by the NAXOS recordings, that may be because I'm so used to the others I have? I should give them a reappraisal. On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

Well, yes, the Terence Blanchard pieces are from the Spike Lee doc about Katrina but about half of the album is comprised of separate compositions written by members of his band. So, really, I could have put this in either thread. -

This was an early recording when Telarc was special that is one of the many versions I have of this material. I remember vibrating the floors, windows, etc. in the house. That 30hz tone is difficult to reproduce.

Zee was a shortlived project consisting of Pink Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright and Dave Harris from Fashion. This was their only album. It's so-so, very heavy on Fairlight synths. Bits of prog, bits of jazz.I am extremely serious. -
