Nice! Isn't the story a bit of Pocahontas meats a bit of Titanic love story meets Braveheart (the whole 'they're taking our land, this is our land' speeches, one man leading all, etc etc) ? At least that's what the trailer suggest.

Not that much from TITANIC, but yes - the story elements from POCAHONTAS (outsider falling in love with the local girl) and BRAVEHEART ("our land must be defended") are present, but then again, these story elements are very general. The latter, in particular, can be applied to any human trangsgression against minority populations in our history.

Except for one or two shots, the film did NOT have a lot of "3D gimmicks". It's just a classical, intense, emotional 2D film journey. I never ONCE thought that this was a "CGI computer game" thingie, which was my greatest worry.

Indeed. Care about making the three main characters likeable, paint the rest as ridiculous caricatures in order to make the main three even more likeable. And that's why I'll never watch MDB again. wink

Actually having seen Avatar on 3D last night, i too have to agree that the blue chick is very hot. Not too sure on Smurfette though...that's probably got to do with some very troubled young years of yours or something.

I´m still dizzy, so my review will be a bit ... shortsentenced.

    - A lot easier on the eyes; even after two hours, I felt neither tired nor any kind of headache.
    - The 3D is every bit as spectacular as they say it is.
    - The world design was exactly what I was hoping for, and even better in some places.
    - The story wasn´t anywhere near as flat as they say it is. There´s not a lot of new stuff here, that´s true, but the mixture of story elements combined with a great choice of characters and actors made the story run as smooth as silk.
    - The emotional impact is hard to describe after twelve hours, but I can tell you that a lot of things hit their mark true.
    - Neytiri is officially the hottest alien in film´s history now.
    - The CGI is probably the best work of that kind I´ve ever seen.
    - The combination of 3D, CGI, other effects work, and the real stuff is absolutely seamless. I´m really sorry for Bay and Abrams, but if any other film than Avatar takes home the FX oscar next year the Academy members will be declared braindead.
    - The score works brilliantly in most places; some stuff, however, is so odd it took me out of the movie a couple of times. I will talk about that later, after I gave the score a couple more spins.

To sum it up: If you see only one movie in theatres this year, make it this one, and do it in 3D. Just to tell your kids you were there when the 3D era really started.

I wholeheartedly agree with Ralph. This is a movie that will be remembered, it's a milestone. How big a milestone it is and what it'll bring exactly and when, we don't know yet, but it's surely an experience that's wholly singular and special, and you'd be a fool to miss.

I guess we both waited for the other to write the review, just to have lesser work, didn´t we? wink

Actually, I didn´t feel like writing anything at all, but since I had been the carrier of the banner for the last weeks, I thought I should just clarify that I´m not hiding in shame. biggrin Far from it.

It is indeed a milestone. I wouldn't be surprised if this is eventually put in the same pantheon as KING KONG (1933), TERMINATOR 2, JURASSIC PARK, TOY STORY and arguably LOTR in terms of groundbreaking special effects and CGI.

I've been saying it for a long time, but I never had any doubt that Cameron wouldn't deliver on his promises. That this movie wouldn't be anything less than a milestone. With everything he did for the big screen he has managed to blow away my expectations and even though some reviews over here say it's not brilliant at all, Avatar will blow me away, and that fact alone will make it brilliant in my head. It's not a movie, it's an experience, just like Titanic is. Avatar is something that I will want to relive again and again.

I'm going for the 3D version tomorrow. Most excited feeling I've had for a film this year, for many years actually.
