I'd go out of way to read it if he reviewed rap music or Justin Bieber.

Sad thing is Varese brings up Goldsmith, yet sadly he is no longer with us -- imagine, just IMAGINE the arranged version of the love theme Jerry would have given us! They should have at least asked Joel.

If Goldsmith - or anyone of his caliber today - would have produced a rerecording with some 60 minutes of score highlights, to a more affordable price, I'd be prone to pick it up. No doubt.
    I am extremely serious.
  1. 60 minutes is double 30. If somehow 60 is worth it, then just buy the Varese edition, and listen to it in 30 minutes chunks.

Or blow chunks -- what ever works.

I actually have the old MCA CD (which is 40-something minutes), coupled with 20 minutes of extra stuff. It's MORE than enough and a good representation of the overall score. If the same program had been performed in a rerecording with, say, Tadlow or the Stromberg & Morgan team or something, it would be great! But maybe that's for the future, long after the current item has sold out.

This is all about marketing for Varese. I hope they make a lot of money on it.

Exactly! Even though I won't be picking it up myself, I hope they make a boat load of cash to allow them to release more even scores in future.

Somehow my guess is it will be sold to people who collect Kirk Douglas or Spartacus material.

White sorting out my shelves I got a hankering to play Bite the Bullet. That's good North stuff. I'll probably pop it in later today.

  2. 109 dollars, now that's a lot of money shocked

I even saw that Star Trek Deluxe Edition is down to less than 1.000 copies shocked

hopefully, the people that really want this will buy this no matter the price range, but a 110 is way out of my league shame
    waaaaaahhhhhhhh!!! Where's my nut? arrrghhhhhhh

I think the ideal solution would've been to release "Spartacus Vol.1 (3 discs)" in 5000 copies, and then "Spartacus Vol.2 (2 discs + DVD)" in 2000 copies. There!! EVERYBODY's happy! I'm a marketing genious.

Maybe there was a deal in the licensing agreement that stipulated they had to release it this way. Also, I'm not sure how re-use fees work but if they released two separate albums wouldn't they have to pay two separate fees?

Look, Townson has treated this score with much love and respect. Honestly, I could do WITHOUT the re-recorded variations of the love theme... but what can you do. You either open your wallet and pay the $100 plus to own this master work (including the book, DVD, etc) or turn your back, walk away and move on.

That's probably way too cumbersome to make financially sense. Besides, none of those alternatives would be for people like me (who just want a single disc, 50-60 minutes, perhaps with the DVD as bonus).

Wow. And here I was, vowing I'd buy this, as everyone calls it, 'masterpiece', in my hunt for all the big milestones in film scoring (while I'm doing the same with films) and to get to know North a bit (which is a big question mark for me, at the moment). And all of a sudden, they release... this. A kick-ass set, with cheap-ass design yet big-ass prices. And couldn't they let the tribute composers pick their own favorite part of the score to re-imagine? Y'know, to avoid... monotone?

Mixed feelings... since it feels like a whole film music event, with all those big names attached to remember how brilliant this score apparantly is, it must be awesome. And, to tell the truth, the clips are beautifull (I already love that main theme). Plus, I'm a huge Kubrick fan, so that alone might be a reason to buy it... yet at that price?! Still, if I hesitate, and it's all gone within days, I might regret is, as this might be going incredibly up in prices on ebay the moment it sells out slant

I'm sure it will sell well.

  3. The main reason I'm getting this, by the way, is for the love theme re-recordings on the last two discs. I can't wait to hear some of the re-interpretations of the score.

Get the Bill Evans CD called Conversations With Myself. It is solo Bill and he does a marvelous job of playing the Love Theme.
    listen to more classical music!
  4. Thanks, will check it out.
It's more than just the idea of one interpretation though. To hear Desplat's, to hear Isham's (who I expect will uncover the jazzy heart of the theme), to hear Tyler's... all these composers we know so well, channeling North.
Pity they couldn't get Williams and Chris Young in on it. (Or as Justin says - Goldsmith. Although he would be very faithful, I would think. Even Poledouris would be great.)

One that separates the music fan who has unlimited funds from the rest. I doubt that a lot of evenings will be spent on this one after the initial purchase/reading. Keep your pants on and a couple of years down the road there will be a good deal out there. Now if it could be had at some point for $25.00 I'd get it. I can be patient.

If money were no issue I would likely buy everything and never getting around to listening to some of it. cheesy

  5. I don't agree that this is some collector nightmare. The odd score is worth the deluxe treatment. I purchased the Bernstein Box. I didn't go for the Blue Box, or many of the subsequent boxes. I can see Spartacus being worth the effort, however. So I will buy. It will be something like the 5th score I've bought this year, so I can hardly be accused of profligate expense. I consider far more reckless to be the man who purchases so much else of the limited editions currently around.

Not really the same, though, is it?
These boxes contained six to thirteen scores.
    This is one score.

Don't get me wrong. I'm always happy when others are happy (means someone somewhere is doing something right smile ), but it certainly smacks like overkill for me.
