I think it was more a case of just letting AVG do what it needed to do after the upgrade to version 9.0 - though I've a feeling that they're going to lose a few users because of the initial slowness.

As an experiment yesterday I eliminated the antivirus, internet connection, and firewall protection from a computer that really doesn't need any of that as its function is to make price labels, nothing else. I would say it easily doubled in speed. Because of what happened to you I would have never thought of it. The experiment is now permanent.

Yeah, in general you're probably much worse over there. Usually, Norway has a very good healthcare system (we don't need "insurances" like you), but in the case of specialists and surgeons (especially in dental care), we have to pay "full-price", so to speak, with only a minimal refund from the state. That sucks.

$530? But surely that's only about 24 Euros?

Seriously though, while I understand (though not condone) the oral surgeon's price (that's truly mindblastingly expensive in any country, I think), that loss of a tax benefit is seriously upsetting. That's a LOT of money.
I don't know about you, but I always calculate such reliefs already into my annual budgets, so whil it's survivavble to not get it, is would be a huge blow.

Are you going to be OK, though? Is there any appeal possibility?
    It's a big sum. sad

It's a complex situation and I don't have the time nor vocabulary to go into it here, but it is basically related to the fact that our apartment complex is in a financial crisis, and one of the means we used to "pressure" the bank into a settlement negotiation (since they gave a loan far higher than they should have) was withholding the monthly payments. In other words, all apartment owners have paid their monthly interests and rents as usual, but the funds have then been "frozen" on an account and not forwarded to the bank. This means that one does not get the tax relief that one normally does when one owns an apartment. It's a "double punishment", in a way (we pay because we own, but don't get the relief that the pay would otherwise bring).

I had no idea these would be the consequences when we agreed to withhold the money from the bank/defendant as means to pressure. I think it's a shock to everyone in my building. It's like if you're already caught in a cage, but then someone starts poking you with a stick.

    Damn. sad

But will you be OK, though?
Or is it too early/fresh to tell yet?

Unfortunately Nordic tax law and consultancy happens to be one of the very few subjects that is actually not in my extensive repertoire of expertises, so I am just left to wish you the very best of luck on this nasty situation, which I hope will be resolved quickly (I would think that as soon as the funds are unfrozen -as long as it's before December 31st- you should be OK, though...).

It's a bit too early to tell, yes, but I have parents that would probably help me out if the crisis is REALLY...well, critical. Even though it's a bit embarassing to ask as an adult, 32-year-old, former university professor. It will be the LAST resort.

Could it be? Have we found an area that Martijn does NOT know intrinsically? wink

Under normal circumstances, the tax relief would come into play if and when the funds were transferred to the bank, yes, but since we're entering into a trial in the coming weeks, all of those funds may be "eaten up" in whatever settlement one comes to. I'll just have to deal with it and buy everyone a packet of toilet paper for Christmas.

Thanks!! Appreciate it. It's been one hell of a year, mostly negative, but also a couple of positive things. It will be interesting to sum things up come December 31.

How frustrating there Thor. Lets hope that trial also doesn't last too long or keeps dragging that shit until the next year.

And here I was thinking Norway was the best country in the world, where such thing wouldn't happen.

Well, not really. You're right but throughout modern history, there were some smaller European countries that flourished in many, many areas, mostly financial and having to do with the quality of their citizens' life.

Well, NEW ZEALAND would certainly be on my list of 'Greatest Country', fjords, huge mountains, rain forest, volcanoes, geysers, a fantastic and incredibly varied coastline, a temperate weather and friendly people with proper pubs ( yeah, proper pubs just like they have here in Britain cool ) ....I spent two of the best months of my life in that country.

smile You can't really form a full opinion on a country unless you also work there a bit, imo.
