It's that time again, coming to the end of a mobile phone contract. Even staying with the same network provider, migrating from an HTC One S to an HTC One Mini 2 hasn't gone completely to plan.

EE still haven't migrated my phone number from my old phone to the new one. It's only a minor quibble - things could have gone a lot worse - but I just want to retire the old phone.

[Edit] It seems that my old number hasn't been migrated over to my new phone. The mobile data connection to the old phone has been stopped and transferred to the new phone, but the temporary phone number I had until my usual number had been transferred has now become my new number.

Looks like it's a call to the shop tomorrow. This will test how good the network provider is.

    Well, imagine this for annoying:

I just returned from a long trip. Haven't slept in 30 hours. Haven't eaten in 7. Tired and shitty shape.

I arrive at my doorstep, only to discover that my bloody keys are gone! Must have been lost in transit somewhere (fallen out of the bag?). No way to get in. I call the houselord and he comes by with the masterkey to let me into my apartment. Some small comfort in that I don't have to break up the lock for thousands of kroner. I have extra spare keys for the two main house ones, although the security key is gone forever. The bike lock I have to break up and replace.

    Oh, well.

I get in and start to unpack. Then I discover that my bloody IPOD is gone too! WTF?!

Not the best end of what has been another fantastic trip otherwise.

Of course. I did that right away. That and the 'code activator', which was also gone.

The only big financial loss here is the iPod -- unless the landlord says I need to change locks and/or replace one of the lost keys.

But it's still very annoying. So easily avoidable if one had been more careful.

Doesn't sound like carelessness so much as it does like pickpocketing. Dammit Thor, of all the rotten luck! angry (I'd be devastated without my mp3 player! It's become much more than a commodity to me: it's really my prime 'media intake' media.)

An insignificant complaint in the grand scheme of things but last.fm's website (specifically their scrobbling service) has been pretty unreliable/useless the last few days - and there's no stability in sight either.

...and soundtrackcollector.com isn't working too well at the moment.

Having to study and not wanting to. I'm so tired and so bored that I haven't done almost anything and my exams are less than a week near. And I have to return to work tomorrow. Well, what can I do!? A deep breath, some excellent music and let that studying begin.

    I find nothing helps.
Grin, stress out, shout at people, be impatient and short-tempered and insufferable, and just try and survive the coming days.

I tend to agree with Martijn on this one. I know that exercise helps many people but I don't have the time and alcohol is out of the question since I'm under medication and I can't indulge. Anyway, a few hours left and then it's over. Thanks for the suggestions though!

My tinnitus has gone completely bananas these last 5-6 days. I'm trying to get a doctor's appointment, but everyone seems to be on holiday.

All I can say is that if THIS is the new chronic volume level I have to live with for the rest of my life, I'm totally fucked. I'd rather be deaf.

How weird that the levels are fluctuating! Isn't that quite rare?
Does it have anything to do with your blood pressure, maybe?

Really sorry about your plight, Thor. sad
I honestly hope they find something to be able to diminish or suppress it.

  5. No, that's rather usual. In my experiance (my left ear tinitus is not nearly as sever as Thor's seems to be) it has to do with stress levels rather than with blood pressure.
The other thing is that you are giving varying degrees of attention to the noise, so that at times it just seems to be louder or quiter. But the noise level flucutuates indeed.

Thor, I keep my fingers crossed for you!

That must be awful, Thor. sad

Btw, could one reason for the fluctuation be due to how much ear wax one has? Could it help to give the ears a flush with one of those ear syringe bulbs?

Anyway, I just realized that I might have tinnitus as well, but mine isn't too bad. I've always had some ringing, but most of the time I don't really notice it. It seems worse now than normal, but I think it's because I used a cotton stick a little while ago, which is what led me to the ear wax theory.

No, ear wax really isn't an issue in this case.

But maybe there's something to the 'stress level' theory. I hope so, anyway. The "normal" noise that I've had for 5-6 years is annoying enough, but possible to live with. This is just insane; twice or three times the volume of that.

Thanks for the support, guys. Let's hope it fluctuates back somewhat.

  6. Yes, but try to see a doctor anyway. In such cases immediate treatment is crucial. Can't you turn to a hospital in Oslo with "ear specialists"? That's what we do in Germany if no resident doctor is available.

No, I'm not better. But I can't fight the system in terms of time. First I need to get a reference from my doctor on Friday, then I need to use that for a specialist who can hopefully take me in next week.

So is it in any way stress or blood pressure related? And is the sound constant, day and night? what do you do for sleeping?

Yeah, the sound is constant, day and night (although I obviously sleep reasonably well at night, so I'm not aware of it then). It's been that for 5-6 years, but I've become accustomed to it somewhat. I've learned to live with it.

Then this thing new thing happens, where it's in a whole other league. Imagine the sound of an old tube television, multiplied by 20, pulsating back and forth. I HOPE it is stress-related, or some other thing, and that it's temporary. I'll find out soon enough, hopefully next week.

Untill then, though, I can only use music listening for masking, not enjoyment. I hope it's not the end of my music listening.

I am sure it hinders with your actual enjoyment of any music too? I still wonder how the sleep process goes in such cases...as for stress, would you say you are stressed? constantly and a lot? Have you checked the ear for ear drum liquids etc?

Not yet. I'll find out as soon as I've been to the doctor's and then the specialist after that.

I'm not stressed as far as workload is concerned; more stressed about the general life situation -- many things that I won't go into here. That would be a blessing; if it was only a matter of unstressing to reduce it to "normal" tinnitus level.

As for sleeping, I have a 'sound pillow' that I've been using for some years (soothing sounds within the pillow that are supposed to shift the focus away from the noise to the sounds), but I've managed to wean myself off that in the last couple of years, especially as the pillow became so flat that the speakers are felt through it. Now I have different rituals for falling sleeping and 'fooling' the brain to ignore the sounds -- funnily enough, it consists of reading through John Williams' filmography, discography, biography etc. that I've printed out and somewhat memorized by now. smile

For chronic tinnitus like I have, the problem is the brain, not the ear damage that occured at some point. It is the brain that is creating the 'counter-sounds'. I guess that's why there is no cure.
