Tom, if I remember correctly, you'll need to get a special tool in order to fully uninstall Norton Antivirus as the regular Add/Remove utility in the Control Panel won't get rid of it fully.

And as a note of caution...when I was tidying up my PC a couple of weeks ago I still found some lines in my start-up routine that were related to Symantec (as a result, I assume, of having Norton as my Antivirus program from over 2 years ago).

It's a bugger to get rid of.

  2. Avast is quite useful and free and doesn't behave strangely on my system. Of the minor virus alerts I've encountered all have been corrected without a problem.

After all the pc talk we had? Tom throw it away, it's a virus on its own. Get panda security 2010 or nod32.

Where do I get those and how much do they cost? I'm downloading a program from Symantec that will remove Norton from my computer.

The amount of fore / back-ground processes that run endlessly on the pc along with the never-ending scans are very heavy on the pc, completely user-unfriendly tormenting you all the time with useless questions and notifications, and in the end the pc hangs up soooooo much and the result in virus-hunting is very poor in comparison to - say, PANDA INTERNET SECURITY, or ESET NOD32.

I've wasted so much time on this antivirus nonsense. I'm guessing that there is something wrong with the Pando too. My machine shouldn't run so fast. It acts like it is 100 degrees outside and it is 60 in my apartment and 30 outside.

I had an old computer that got noisy (motor running on high) when it was indexing certain files. It would do this periodically (once every couple of days) and when that happened, it ate a lot of CPU and my computer almost froze. I tried disabling some of the file indexing but to no avail. I later installed Linux and hence no more trouble.

That behavior should not be normal. Looks like it's stuck on some process. You might want to try restarting the system and giving it another shot. Or wait till D gets back.

Use nothing/no anti-virus, it causes always more problems than it solves. Just watch out, like Martijn previously mentioned.

Did you update via internet, or the program Tom? Perhaps you did install a virus. I recommend to back up your documents, run some of the suggestions Demetris proposed some pages ago, otherwise you'll keep on having troubles.

If all else fails, run Combofix, or re-install Windows. Ask help if needed.

Tom, it doesn't have to do with the antivirus, but rather a more general state of your pc.

Listen, since your pc is fragged, we should try and improve its running state, so you may need to uninstall the antivirus for the time being, with REVO (see below).

Can you list your pc's specifications? Also you should install (free) REVO UNINSTALLER (found here http://download.cnet.com/Revo-Uninstall … 7648.html, a very good uninstaller tool) and remove everything in your pc you don't want and you don't use anymore. Be sure to remove it through revo uninstaller and when the program itself finishes the uninstalling procedure, be sure to select all and delete any remains it will leave behind and which will be picked up by REVO.

Also, revo uninstaller has a tool which checks which programs start up automatically with your pc. You should print-screen that and make a photo for me to see, if you want and you have the time, i am sure there's a lot of unecessary stuff taking up ram and cpu in your pc.

Also, be sure to download and install CCLEANER from filehippo.com and run all its options (cleaner, and registry) and when you're finished uninstalling junk programs from your pc and finished with ccleaning, be sure to defragment your hard disks.

As i said, it has nothing to do with the antivirus, but rather a general bad state of pc but if you still find panda too heavy (which you shouldn't) you can always try another antivirus from here http://filehippo.com/software/antivirus/, namely avast, or even eset nod 32 trial for 30 days.

  3. Hi Tom. If you're like me then you may find this whole computer issue both annoying and leaving you with a feeling of being completely out of your depth. I certainly felt this a few weeks ago when my PC was acting really slowly.

The first thing that came to mind when you mentioned your PC making a noise was that perhaps your computer was working really hard doing an initial index of your PC after having added new anti-virus software. Perhaps leaving the PC running for a while may complete the index and it will then calm down.

Perhaps if you download the utility Process Explorer I find this a really useful tool to help me see what's running on my PC at the time. It's a glorified Task Manager (you can set the options to replace Task Manager) and allows you to kill processes that are a drain on your system. I'd also recommend Defraggler which is a great defragging tool (aparently better than the utility that comes with Windows).

I'd recommend what Demetris says above. I've been using Revo Uninstaller the last few weeks and it's a great utility for removing programs. One thing I would say though about this program is that for the uninitiated the registry clear-out steps towards the end of a program unistall can be a bit daunting. I'd recommend ignoring these steps, and leaving the remaining registry entries in place rather than deciding which of them to delete (some may be shared with other programs). Once Revo Uninstaller is finished run CCleaner (using the Registry part) and this program will pick up a lot of the now redundant registry entries that remain from the previously-uninstalled program. I've had no problems removing all the highlighted registry entries and no problems running my PC after they have all been cleared out.

And if you do want a free anti-virus package I now use Avira Antivirus. It's not a drain on my system and the recently updated version has a much improved automatic updating system.

    So, Tom,

    - Install Revo Uninstaller*, Process Explorer, CCleaner & Defraggler
    - Uninstall all your unwanted programs (and use CCleaner to do a tidy up)
    - Use Revo Uninstaller to look at your start up process
    - Use CCleaner to tidy out things like temporary files, etc
    - Defrag your PC with Defraggler

As Demetris mentions, remember to remove programs using Revo Uninstaller (which uses the program's own uninstall process as part of it's removal process). Don't use the Add/Remove Program option in Control Panel then Revo because Revo Uninstaller cannot help clear out programs that have not been deleted by Revo Uninstaller. If you have a lot of programs that you've uninstalled using the Add/Remove Programs and you think that there's a lot of rubbish left behind then I think they recommend that you re-install the previously-removed program and then uninstall it with Revo Uninstaller. This will clear out all the remnants.

I have some more work to do, yikes. I will say that this morning everything did go very smoothly. I'll begin with the revo uninstall. I've done the defraggle not too long ago. Even though there is still over half the space available on my hard drive (internal) 8 years is a long time I realize for a computer. However, my needs for it are pretty basic so we'll give this a try and see what happens. My external drive has all of my personal and important material.

I appreciate all of the help from the MT crew but my first try at the uninstaller resulted in some sort of failure(integrity issue). This is the frustrating thing for me. Maybe my computer is like an old car and it has too many miles on it.

Tom, what we propose is generally accepted and tested, as far as pc's maintenance goes. Care to elaborate on more details on your last problem? Clearly, the frustration you're facing has to do with the state of the pc (not the specs alone, which are acceptable - maybe the small size of ram is a problem, but it can't be causing all this alone) but generally the overall state of your software (and hardware). Is it a desktop or a laptop? What error did you get exactly on this last time you reported back?

As I mentioned above, Tom, my PC is a lower spec than your one and I was able to sort things out to an acceptable level until I get a new PC.

It's definitely worth chipping away at the problem.
