    Yes, indeed. We'll see. ITV News report there is no evidence that he had any political affiliation at all, and had (quite a long time ago) been treated for mental disorders (which could mean a lot of things).

    A few possible outcomes:

    A) Gunman was driven by Ideology A, which is okay to criticize. Media will rightly scrutinize that ideology without deferring to apologetics.

    B) Gunman was driven by Ideology B, which is not okay to criticize. Media will focus on his mental state, the security of the venue, and the ability to acquire a firearm, while reminding us of the many non-murdering people who associate with Ideology B.

    C) Gunman was genuinely insane, with his own reasons. Will still be used, by example, by the media to show that Ideology B is not a problem.

    D) Of course he could be genuinely deranged plus driven by either A or B

    But, as Martijn wisely puts it, we'll see.

    Seems as if I may have miscalled this one.
    From the details I was almost convinced this was the most insane happenstance where a brave lady was caught in a crossfire of hatred when intervening in a fight....but the police now does indeed seem to lean towards a political motive, even if there doesn't seem to be a conspiracy.

    Bloody hell.

    Yeah true, so 'miscall' was the wrong word to use.
    It is just that with the media jumping all over the claims (and immediate retractions) of a 'Britain First' cry, AND the fact that several eye witnesses claimed she was trying to stop a fight, AND the current feverpitch political state of the UK, I was almost convinced this was just a horrific coincidence, where a brave woman stepping into a fight between two idiots got the very worst of it.

    It just SEEMED the most logical scenario.

    Plus I also really, REALLY wished this wasn't a political assassination.
    Not that any other kind is "better", but this carries the additional weight of trying to assassinate an IDEA or a WORD, which makes it all the more horrifying and evil.

    So I didn't miscall it. But I did misjudge it.

    So the referendum is today. I don't have an opinion on all of it but in general, of all things that have been said and (some rightflyy, some not) criticised, there was rarely a reply of the EU institutions themselves. That's what I'm disappointed at.

    I hope for a stay, because what happens after that is much more certain than leaving an initially positive and strong partnership.

    Norway's last EU referendum was in 1994, and I was just one year too young to vote. But I was a firm wannabe 'No' voter at the time (no doubt influenced by my father, who's been a long time local/liberal politician). Since then, I've travelled around Europe and discovered the many virtues of EU. At the same time, I still feel the benefits of not being a member (for Norway) outweigh the benefits of being a member; not sure if the same can be applied to Britain, which has a somewhat different social structure and not as many oil assets etc.

    For the record, Norway voted NO in both 1972 and 1994, and there are no reports of any upcoming referendum. But although we're not part of the EU, we're still very much dependent on EEA agreement for trade and other things. If you have a well-developped economy, it IS possible to survive in Europe without the EU.
    I am extremely serious.

Well I'd just like to say a hearty thank (fuck) you to all the undereducated, underinformed idiots in non-London England for enabling probably the shittiest political decision the world has seen since the Iraq War. Despite the polls seeming so close I always assumed that common sense would win out in the end, but apparently not. At least the pound sterling plummeting like a skydiver with a faulty parachute is making the awfulness of this decision obvious in a hilariously immediate way. And I suppose the resignation of David Cameron can be seen as a silver lining, although I have no doubt that 2016 politics will find a way to replace him with someone far worse, Nigel Farage or some other such ghastly personage.

  23. I am clinging to the hope that the 'advisory' referendum will not be acted on by Parliament. Some of the things I have read that suggest that the vote result does not mean that leaving will automatically happen, may be clutching at straws, but perhaps politicians will find a way of applying the brakes to all of this long enough for leave-voters to come to their senses and see the wide-ranging ramifications of their actions.

  26. It's 2 years after the UK enacts an Article 50 notification. That's what officially starts the process. (If I understand things correctly.)

    It's up to the government to do this and at a time of their choosing. Some say it should wait until after the UK has a new Prime Minister, others suggest the process should be delayed until 2017 and after French/German elections so that us leaving does not become election issues in those countries.

    I think the Brexit needs to happen asap. Without consessions, which is what 52% of the people want. Otherwise this will be a long and tedious process where other countries might profit from.
