Horner's hymn was used in the Saving Private Ryan trailer!

    Holy crap that's cheesy.

    The music's nice.... just inappropriate.

I agree, very VERY cheesy! I remember seeing that trailer at a cinema and thinking, oh no, a Spielberg schmaltz fest, I'll give that one a miss.

...and then it turned out to be one of the best war movies I've ever seen.

Amen to that. I strongly prefer the rerelease trailer, that uses Williams' Hymn to the Fallen. It's goosebump inducing.

HARRY GREGSON WILLIAMS - prince of Persia

If only Robin Hood was half as engaging as this. I like it. 2nd cue, Raid on Alamut is very impressive.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

It was a general comment. I like this score here, it reminds me of Kingdom of Heaven a lot. It has a lot of unoriginal yet, but engaging - at least to me, dramatic chord-led themes and choir to keep me interested. There are some snoozing moments in it yes, and there's not much i suspect to keep me returning back for more but it's much more decent than Robin Hood. Streitenfield isn't hitting any right notes with me yet, apart from the Body of lies score and that not just because it's original or anything special, but because i love middle eastern music.

    I agrre with steven.

Robin Hood has 2 or 3 themes wich contains more emotion than the whole Prince of Persia score.

Of course, POP is overall a better album and better in composition.

Prince of Persia is much a better score. As for Robin Hood, we must be listening to a different score 'cause what i heard 3 times now was a snoozer.

Since John has posted some of his IM2 tracks in his Facebook site...

NP: Iron Man 2 (John Debney)

"monaco" and "iron man battles the drones" are highly addictive.

"main titles" "sledgehammer" and 2 or 3 other tracks are cool too.

All the strengh that POP doesn't have.

    JAMES HORNER - avatar

I know it has its lovers but also haters, as it's the case with every Horner work, particularly the major ones, but this is a very well-worked score gifted with some stunning moments, like the "war" piece for instance. One of the most notable scores of the last decade for sure.

    Is Harry's music still soulless?

His style is all over the score and seems to always be gliding on a groove of sort.

No, definitely not in this score. Same goes for Veronica Guerin, Spy game, kingdom of heaven, man on fire.

Well, it is for me too. But after a BIG dissapointment in the movie, the actual score has 3 or 4 tracks that are highly addictive and wild.

NP:Prince of Persia Sands of Time (HGW)

In resume Simbad + KingDon of Heaven.

the Good: the main theme. the middle eastern soundscape. some good action moments. the sense of exotism.
    I enjoy it.

the Bad: repetitive. Souless. Harry's action music is too much based on strings and percusion and too few on Brass or metals.
I enjoy it but not as much as it could be.

well, I think it is souless here too.

Some action stuff is vibrant enough, but when the main themes are so generic you can't be very emotive.

Anyway, You that are liking so much the score, can you tell if you notice some other theme than the "arabic" and the "heroic"? Or if you like some "dramatic" track?

I will take another listen, then.

I think it has a lot of work around the main theme and the 2ndary motives to drive it away from being soulless. Rather the contrary i'd say, the boldly dramatic choir-and-string orchestra of pieces like:

    "Raid on Alamut"
    "Tamina Unveiled"
    "The king and his sons"
    "Trusting Nizam"
"So, you're going to help me?"
    "Return to Alamut"
    "this is no ordinary dagger"
    "destiny"
    "raid on alamut"

    are far from being soulless.

There's much less auto pilot electronica drone than the majority of his scores, and there's much less underscoring than usual. Almost every piece has a motif or two, plus the main theme as heard in the vibrant opening cue, "the prince of Persia" has something from the subtle elegance of the epics of the past, at least to my ears. It has absolutely succeeded in transporting me right there in that era, place and time of the movie and i haven't even watched it yet. Of course it's not a big bold epic in the traditional sense, but it shows a very inspired Harry if you ask me. Listen to it loud.
