Quite simply one of Scotland's greatest writers, an immense loss IMO.

I have never read any of Banks' works but Anne is a big fan of his writing (though she prefers the non-science fiction stuff).

But from what I do know of him, I only hope that I can face my own end with the clarity and dry humour of Iain Banks.

I read the entirety of his "Culture" saga. Ony his latest - and sadly last - novel I yet have to pick up.

That "Culture" series stands proudly alongside Herbert's "Dune", Heinlein's "Future History", Asimov's "Robots / Foundation" or Zimmer Bradley's "Drakover".

As well as these fine writers Banks stood for science fiction and space opera that is intellectually worthwhile.

    He is missed already.

I found out by accident composer Eddie Horst died in 2012. He apparently commited suicide.

Horst worked very few projects, mostly TV, but amongst them was the popular series "In the Heat of the Night". He also did some commercials, and worked with some song artists.

Shocked me! His legacy will be that he was in one of the best TV shows ever made, in some peoples opinions THE best TV show ever made.

This is shocking news. I wasn't a particularly big fan of SOPRANOS (although I intend to check it out again, in case I missed something the first time around), but I've seen Gandolfini in this and that over the years. I remember him from CRIMSON TIDE, in particular.
    I am extremely serious.
  8. I can't remember seeing him in anything.

I thought his greatest role was as an American general in the excellent The Thick Of It feature film In The Loop.
A fine, if somewhat typecast actor.

His last movie has still to be released. It's made by a talented young Flemish director who's editing the film in NY now.

Somewhere up in heaven is an angel with big ears.

One of my favourite comedic greats has passed away. He was only sixty.
Not the nine o' clock news and Alas, Smith & Jones have set new standards in the dighties, and to this day I enjoy watching reruns: the ideas and 'new' direction of comedy remains fresh.
And of course he directed one of my very favourite films The Tall Guy.

    Thanks, Mel.

Mel was comic hero to me in my youth and ever since. I loved Not the Nine 0'Clock News and Smith & Jones.
Actually, I've often been called "Mel Smith" due to having kind of similar mannerisms and features to him.
His passing is truly sad news but I'm so grateful to have so many comic memories from this wonderful man!
    Thank you so much Mel!
  9. Dennis Farina, actor famous for his roles in series like Crime Story, but also films like Get Shorty, has died, aged 69. He was a former police officer and started in movies as a consultant (and good friend) of Michael Mann's, then starting in his feature debut, Thief.

I always liked his acting, though I haven't seen that much.

  10. Thanks for Broughtfan over at FSM:

Sad to report that musician extraordinaire Mr. James Decker has passed away at age 91. Jim was Columbia Pictures first (principal) horn throughout the fifties (he's the soloist on the "On The Waterfront" main title), transitioning in the sixties into one of the most in-demand freelance musicians of the sixties and seventies (he retired in the mid-eighties). His identity will be known to anyone who has the La-La Land Star Trek original soundtrack set as he was first horn on a majority of these episodes including the second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before." Television music fans will also hear his horn on episodes of The Andy Griffith Show, Thriller, Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., Get Smart, I Spy, Lassie, Hawaii Five-0, The Wild Wild West, The Man From Uncle, Cimarron Strip, Bewitched, The Lucy Show, Mannix, Mission: Impossible, The Invaders, Cowboy in Africa, The Odd Couple, Bonanza, Columbo, The Waltons, Little House on the Prairie, Highway to Heaven, Roots, Logan's Run (TV series) and the list goes on and on. He's also featured on Jerry Goldsmith's Players (first horn), Capricorn One (the original LA sessions) and Islands of the Stream and John Williams' Family Plot and the original ET soundtrack album (the sparkling MCA re-recording). He was also solo horn (in an ensemble of a dozen or so session players) on Paul Glass' Lady in a Cage score.

Star Trek (TOS) episodes/sessions on which Mr. Decker played first horn (not a complete listing):

Where No Man Has Gone Before
    The Man Trap
    Charlie X
Mudd's Women (which he recorded immediately following an Earle Hagen I Spy date)
Star Trek Main/End Title 1967-8 (and Courage composed/conducted library music)
    Amok Time
    Metamorphosis
    Who Mourns for Adonais?
    The Doomsday Machine
    Mirror, Mirror
Star Trek Main/End Title 1968-9 (and Hatch conducted library music)
    The Enterprise Incident
The Empath/Is There In Truth No Beauty? (recorded same day)

R.I.P, Jim. Thanks for all the great performances. Today in tribute I will play "Mainly On The Plains" (from FSM's I Spy release), which was one of Earle's favorite I Spy scores (mine, too) and yet another session where Jim played first horn.

I never read any of his books but I was still saddened to hear of the death of TOM CLANCY at such a relatively young age.

There's no doubt that some movies based on his books had some great scores, particularly by Poledouris, Horner and Goldsmith.

Me too. They're very right wing for my tastes but most enjoyable all the same.

I've never really found out why he stopped writing (I assume he had little if anything to do with the books that came out under his name in recent years, like you, Pawel, so didn't read them).
  13. Clancy was actually pretty close to the Tea Party, that's true, though ironically he was VERY critical or G. W. Bush.
