Typical media over-exaggerating on a widely technical subject matter they don't know good at all and they like to blow up especially in times close to other major aviation accidents (in this case, SpanAir). One-minute apart at their speeds is lots of miles apart actually.

Perhaps, but it does say that the one airliner descended in order to avoid the other aircraft. I believe in another article I read, they mentioned it was the traffic avoidance system (I forget the actual term) that made the descent. Isn't that system only used in extreme situations since it would be making a move not given or validated by ATC?

    TCAS

    Traffic collision avoidance system

Used frequently in aviation, especially in the busy skies of the U.S. It's programmed to capture a closing plane's signal from far away enough so that it actually does what it's supposed to, let the pilots know of the other plane's presence and act accordingly BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE AND DANGEROUSLY CLOSE. Pilots say it's almost every-day occurrence. Some stories leak to the media and boom, there you go.

Hmm, my understand of the system was quite different. I didn't realize is was used so frequently. Very interesting. Thanks for clearing that up.

Well, don't be mistaken; When tcas alarm sounds things CAN get pretty nasty if you don't pay attention and / or don't act accordingly, as i've too experienced it in the simulator. But there are various levels of the alarm and it all begins when it initially picks up a signal from a relatively close plane (which actually is far enough to give you plenty of time to act) in a "yellow" level of alarm and a male voice repeating the word "traffic traffic" and it's relatively long before it goes into the "red alert" area where it gives directions "descend" or "ascend" in order to avoid collision. After it's all gone, a "clear of traffic" thing is heard.

But at this initial *yellow* level, by calculations of current speed, attitude, altitude and course from the 2 airplanes (yours and the other closing in), the system estimates that at some point the 2 will collide. But just 2 focused pilots and a slight move of the yoke in alternation of any of the above parameters, then the TCAS alarm is nothing serious.

See this example from a professional pilots simulator, TCAS encounter at very low altitude and extremely close proximity (not "one minute apart") during final approach (landing) in an airbus sim.

I've heard that TCAS led to one crash, actually. One plane was told to ascend, the other one to descend at the same time and they collided.

If you're talking about what I think you are, both planes were told to do one thing by TCAS and something else by ATC which led to confusion in the cockpit and conflicting instructions. After that incident, I believe pilots were told to follow TCAS and disregard instructions from ATC because of the conflicting information.

Yeah, i will give you the detailed link when i get back home from work. It's not as simple as that and pilots were confused and didn't follow the instructions of the TCAS.

Hm, but how does that TCAS work then? I would think it assumes the other plane keeps moving in the same direction and it will try to avoid that plane. But the other plane is getting instructions too right?

All passenger planes are equipped with TCAS systems and even if the systems are not communicating with one another (there's no possible way), the calculations made by TCAS are very accurate, fast and real time. If one plane starts changing direction, altitude or altimeter or speed according to what its TCAS tells them to do, then the other plane's TCAS will automatically calculate this changing status and issue new instructions ACCORDINGLY to this its own crew that will further decrease the separation between the two planes.

Tell me about it, i skip-forwarded 'till i reached the good stuff! Media rushed to the scene hoping they'd record a live crash (as they always hope rolleyes ) and thus the huge duration.

I actually never took them. I flew only twice in my life and both times they were the airlines of the country I flew to - Air France and British Airways. Happy of the service. It was cheaper than LOT to any of these countries.
