  1. The event looks real enough, but I was wondering if the walls of the hole were slightly enhanced. The lighting somehow doesn't look quite right.

    It is real. It's happened a few times before.
    Apparently the water from the sewers there erodes the rock the city is built on at an astonishing rate.
    It's actually happened before, in 2007. A hole exactly comparable: 100 meters deep, 30 meters wide!

  2. Interesting that the Americans had a "small team" of geologists rooting around. A skeptic may say that they were looking for a more tangible reason for helping in the region?

    But that would be a cynical assessment of the situation.

    Quite cynical indeed.
    Slightly akin to evil tongues and minds suggesting that Marshall help really was instigated to kickstart post-war American industries. (Point being that even if there is a clear self-serving interest, that doesn't mean by a long shot that that wouldn't have short and long term beneficial effects in the region).
