    Simulated earthquake. Very scary situation...

    http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=acb_1266815100

I remember when Anne and I visited the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco many years ago we tried the 1906 earthquake simulator. It was a small (2-man) platform - with a rail to hold on to - that recreated the ground movement of the 7.8 magnitude 'quake. It only lasted about 45 seconds as I recall, but it seemed such a long time even in the safety of the museum!

There's a similar contraption you can try in the Science Museum in London.

It seemed horrific though. I'd imagine 7+. Also did anyone understand if it was a smaller scale model or an actual sized one? I don't have time to observe it in detail (proportional relations etc) as i'm leaving for work but that'd be very interesting to find out.

I wondered exactly the same thing D, it looked to be full size but it could be deceiving, it would be weird going into a huge indoor area to find a full appartment block.

That was a bit creepy at the start. I thought it was a spider infested with parasites or something else.

Parasitoid wasps are way too creepy. Check out this youtube video of how a wasp makes a precise sting in a roach, making it a zombie, leading it to a nest, injecting eggs and the eventual hatching.

Here's another where a caterpillar is infected. What's super cool is that it makes the caterpillar unnaturally aggressive which aids it to fight off predators. A cruel twist of nature that makes an infected host protect the young parasite inside it. shocked

Spiders? CUTE!? Spiders aren't cute. They're just not... we're wired to find them creepy!

Okay, put it this way: imagine you're sitting at your table eating your breakfast. What would you rather have jump on the table and greet you: a kitten, or a wolf spider with its babies on its back?

    Mia who? wink

The video says it's about the same scale as 1995 Kobe Earthquake (M7.3), and the building is an actual sized model.

Actually they did many more experiments like that... because our islands are constantly quaking freezing

An actual sized model and received all that damage? Damn, it looks unbelievable, the way it shakes and breaks up like this. Earthquakes scare the crap out of me.

    1.Place drinking glass over spider.
2.Move glass a bit so the spider climbs onto the inner sides of the glass.
3.Take a piece of cardboard, or some other flat square board and slide it under the glass, so you can take the glass off the wall while the spider remains trapped.
4.Hold glass out of window upside down and shake it so spider falls out.
    5.Get the willies

There are variants of this method of course. I usually use a piece cardboard, but you can use other items, as long as they are flat and rigid.

I'm not sure I'd be able to eat my breakfast whilst looking at a spider wolf with its babies crawling all over it (and there's something wrong with you if you can), but it would be extremely fascinating to watch, no doubt about it.
