I love feathered dinosaurs. This one being my favourite.

And, yes, birds are dinosaurs, cladistically speaking.

    Thanks Steven, much appreciated beer

Loved some of the artwork and, oh, I'm sure # 2/11 is a cast member of EastEnders.

I remember well my very first talk in school was on dinosaurs (this must have been in 1979 or 1980), and I remember showing this drawing of an archaeopteryx, which the book said was quite possibly a (oh hilarity and incredulous looks!) a dinosaur...with feathers!

Now of course the relationship between dinosaurs and birds is far more firmly established, with evidence suggesting feathers were far more common than assumed in previous decades.

Ah, the innocence of youth...when dinosaurs without exceptions were considered to be nigh-mythical creatures with big teeth, standing as tall as houses and mountains.

I'm unable to find it now, but the book featured a picture of the only parts they had found of a new and terrible dinosaur, they called deinonychus (or "terrible claw") which they figured was FAR larger and more dangerous than T-Rex, due to its ENORMOUS arms. The picture figured a man standing next to a metal skeleton that had the arms attached in scale with a T-Rex's arms.

Of course they know now that the deinonychus was a velociraptor, and WAY smaller than T-Rex...but with exceptionally long arms! dizzy

I used to have nightmares about the monster deinonychus...

    Nice story cool

Funny enough, Spielberg's Velociraptors were nearer in size to the very similar Deinonychus.

Actually deinonychus IS a type of velociraptor! smile

(Yeah, yeah, yeah, I considered to do this as a True/False, but then I considered it'd only be of interest to you and me. dizzy )

  2. I actually think it's kind of cute: mommy spider with all her little ones.

Now that doesn't mean that I would pick her up and cuddle her if I would come across her any time soon, but it does look beautiful to my scientific eye.

If she would wonder in to my house, I would definitely get her outside safely and not kill her.

Hehe, I thought the same. It creeped me out and made me go "awwww, how cute" at the same time.

I'd put her outside too, but I'd certainly experience the heebie-jeebies the rest of the day.

You'd go close to her, pick her up with your hands and gently put her outside? You big liar.

I use the same method and it works fine for me. I tend to look trough the glass and study them a bit before releasing them. I just don't really like touching them (or letting them touch me) and I definitely wouldn't like to have mommy with the kids crawl over my hands, but look at her trhough a glass... No problem.

By the way, you guys are really killing the myth here of the manly men who help the distressed screaming women when a spider is in the house. Only Peter would help out a spooked-out girl...

    Good for you punk
