OK, so I'll put up the next one:

CASABLANCA - CLASSIC MUSIC FROM HUMPHREY BOGART FILMS (Charles Gerhardt/RCA)

This is a classic album in the equally classic RCA/Gerhardt series. I'm sure Erik can testify. Tracks and more info here:

As usual, pm me your interest and I'll pick a winner in a week.

I received the CD this morning - though I didn't video the post arriving nor me opening of the package. I felt they lacked the drama of a prize draw.

Thanks to Stefan for the CD and a comment will be coming soon!

I've now had a couple of listens to Rob Roy and I enjoyed it a lot. To me the main theme is quite uplifting and optimistic without being overly dramatic, there is a nice balance of regular orchestra and Celtic influences and I like Burwell's use of the orchestra in some of the dramatic passages. And the vocals, I really liked those.

Funny that Hollywood bundles Celtic instruments together and uses them interchangeably between Ireland and Scotland!

I there is not a review of this on the way I will do one in the next day or two.

No different from Jerry Goldsmith using pan pipes for Nicaragua.

...or a full symphony orchestra for ancient Rome wink

  10. In this case there is a bit of a difference - to my mind at least. I assume the use of the Irish pipes and drum were to give a Scottishness to the score. I suppose the more traditional bagpipes is the main instrument associated with Scotland but it is not easily integrated into conventional orchestral music. Specific musical forms are another way to suggest Scottishness.

Use of an orchestra where no orchestra would have been around is there to feed our own modern ears.

  11. Just ignore my previous comment. I was getting too caught up in labels when I remembered that Rob Roy is played by Liam Neeson.
