    National Symphony or National Symphonic Orchestra.
    (Literally "State Band"...usually the name for the little ensemble stuck, but it's generally really a full-scale orchestra).

  10. The term goes back to feudal times, when it became fashionable for kings to entertain their own orchestra. That was the beginning of professional symphonic orchestras in Germany.
    The tradition has translated itself into republic Germany. The country today has more professional orchestras in relation to the number of citizens than any other land. All these orchestras are largely payed for by the state.

    But only the old orchestras that go back to baroque times are called "Staatsorchesta", like "Staatskapelle Dresden".

  18. I need to get the Classical Symphony, I heard it once live and it was actually my first proper introduction to the composer. Not really knowing how he sounds, I took a somehow classically oblivious friend to a Prokofiev concert in high school (I think it was my first philharmonic concert ever, not counting a glass harmonica one in summer before that).

    I've seen a number of Prokofiev works performed live but never the Classical Symphony.

    Shamefully it's been many years since I last saw a performance of classical music sad

    NP: IRIS: CIRQUE DE SOLEIL (Danny Elfman)

    Saw the show in LA last year (the most amazing live show I've ever seen), but the music is a bit "too" busy on CD. Still plenty of highlights, though.

    Iris is, to me, the best thing Elfman has done since his early 90s glory days...since Black Beauty, lets say. It's so varied, so well-developed, with none of the autopilotishness and lack of focus in his recent fantasy scores. It's my favorite modern Elfman (well, modern orchestral Elfman; for "hybrid" Elfman I'd pick Planet of the Apes).

    True, it has many highlights. But I can barely make it through tracks like "Movie Studio" and "Rooftops". Both of those segments were some of the most spectacular in the show itself, though.

    Like Mahler's 1st which didn't fit the mold of his other symphonies the same could be said about Prokofiev. I recommend both.

    To me this is the pinnacle of audio drama: not just as far as storytelling is concerned (which is innovative enough as it is), but as a true pioneer in audio design: the sound is so crucial to the proceedings and the drama that it nigh becomes another actor! (In fact, having read througha few behind-the-scenes articles, it is quiyte amazing what creativity has gone into it. The BBC Radiophonic Workshop redesigned itself once again to meet the requirements of a new, visuals-driven era: to somehow create a "movie" you could hear.)

    I like the fact that Geoffrey Perkins and the BBC, decades later, finished the epic going through Adams' entire range (and even, incredibly cleverly. incorporating Adam's voice -he had passed away by that time-) incorporating as much of the old cast as possible.
    The advanced age of the cast shows (eh...is audible) at times, and Peter Jones (the Book) , who passed away before is sorely missed (even though his role is very cleverly transposed) but it's a sheer delight to have the sage continue and wrap up.

    And man, what a stroke of genius to use that song for a leader.
    As it stated on the back of the original album (I own pretty much all incarnations of The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy): "many people asked me where they could get a copy of the title theme, only to be amazed to find they had owned it for quite some time already". Fantastic arrangement by Tim Souster, too!

  25. If I remember correctly, the arrangement by Simon Souster was made for the TV adaptation. The radio play used the original recording by The Eagles.

    That's correct, and for the LP versions, which were my initial acquaintance with the Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy's phenomenon.

    It was quite amusing to find my initial thinking upon hearing the Eagles' version was that "it was slightly off". smile

    I was late to Hitch-Hikers Guide, My Mom, who was no fan of sci-fi loved listening to this when it was first broadcast and kept saying how much I would love it, I eventually got there but I was reluctant due to my Moms ( usually ) lack of empathy towards sci-fi.
