    Exciting, stunning, BRILLIANT! punk

I have this one too, mate! beer

Didn't listen to it in one or two ages though, now that I come to think of it. I love the echoism (Lautmalerei) when Nyman incorporates the sound of a train into the rhythmic structure of the music. The final part is so elevating. So great!

Indeed it is, I bloody love it! It brings tears of joy beer love

NP: PET SOUNDS (The Beach Boys)

Classic album, of course, this is the remastered version released a few years ago. Perfect for a semi-good summer day here in Oslo.

The 40th anniversary edition, right? Brilliant!
Whereas I found Brian Willson's "Smile" a bit "difficult". slant

  2. NP: The Planets - Gustav Holst (Deutsche Grammophon, 1981)

Yes, a fantastic album. I really liked Ferry's solo album from a couple of years later too, Boys And Girls.

    LOVE IT!!!!

I own the BBC Philharmonic version, which isn't great, but I've heard the Karajan version though and it's really good. Did you listen to his version of Mozart's Requiem?
  4. I don't think so. But I own all the DG-Karajan-Symphony-box sets. Hayden, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms ... you name it.

Of the Requiem I own the version recorded by Neville Marriner with the Academy of St. Martin in the Field. From the "Amadeus" soundtrack.

Anyway, the other recording of "The Planets" I own is Simon Rattle with the Berlin Philharmonics. A two CD set. For the second CD they commissioned compositions for other celestial bodies from various composers. Quite nice!

That's an admirable collection you have there, with the Karajan set. And I understand the obsession. I have the Leonard Bernstein Symphony set and I love it.

I may have said it before but the version of THE PLANETS I've always recommended above others is Charles Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony with Karajan's just behind that.

    lp, Leonard Bernstein? Good choice!

  5. Lenny Bernstein? O, yeah!

I own the DG box set of his recordings of Gustav Mahler's symphonies, Mahler being my favourite "symphonist".
It features the Vienna and New York Philharmonics.

His interpretation of Mahler's 2nd "Ressurrection" with the NY Phil. is one of my favourite classical recordings ever. Bernstein makes it slow and elegic. A meditation more than anything else.

Yet I am nor really an expert when it comes to classical music. I know a few things about the symphonic tradition but that's about it. I also avoid discussion boards about classical music, for those a ruff places. Ever visited a Wagnerian board? Insane!

    LOL.
  6. NP: The Dark Side of the Moon (1973) - Pink Floyd

On the party celebrating my 16th birthday some of my friends would present me with the vinyl LP of Dark Side of the Moon.

I remember another friend of mine would wirte me a letter some days later expressing her concern about this record being un-christian. Her parents were members of a small evengelical community. I would call it a sect.

Of course she acted out of genuine concern and it was pure goodness on her part.

Later her parents would deny her A level examinations and instead force her to be educated as a nurse. She was devestated as she dreamed of being a doctor. Other parents, teachers and the headmaster would implore them not to take that chance from their gifted daughter but that was in vain.

Again much later I heard that she had devorced her husband, left that evangelical community, abandoned contact with her parents for good and that she had an illigitimate child. I sometimes still hear about her via other friends.

I always have to think of that when I listen to this great album.

I should love this album as there are synths, vovcoders, drum sets and the vibes of the 80s. For whatever reason I still can't relate to it.

I rathe put on The Best of OMG.
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
  9. Don't miss this beat ...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jspBeVa0sTs

    Dr. Mabuse - Propaganda

One of the best songs of the 80s.

Kein Zurück für dich - There's no way back

Did you know: The unintelligible spoken words at the end of the song are the same as in the beginning. German and backwards.

Why does it hurt when my heart misses the beat?
Warum schmerzt es, wenn mein Herz den Schlag verpasst?
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
  10. Just on TV (arte):

Edvard Grieg: Piano Concerto in a minor op. 16

    Piano: Lars Vogt
The Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig conducted by Ricardo Chailly.

    Wonderful.

NP: FOLK SONGS FOR FAR OUT FOLK (Fred Katz)

Brilliant jazz album from 1958 that includes Katz' jazz arrangements of various Hebrew, African and American songs. Katz was one of a kind. Here, he's got a whole bunch of top class west coast musicians to play along, including a swingin', 26-year-old Johnny T. Williams on piano. Some wild playing going on in the track "Been in the Pen So Long".
