NP: The Final Cut (1983) - Pink Floyd

There is much disdain about this album. It's said to be a Waters solo album. (Well, it is.) Songs are said to be leftovers from The Wall. (They partly are.) Be that as it may: I can get drunk on this magnificent album.

The one Floyd album I can't get into. I think I've talked about this with Thor. I tried and tried and never liked it and will never hear it willingly again.

I'm listening to a Naxos compilation called "Battle Music," a 2 CD set that includes all the famous music of Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Rimsky-Korsakov, and some of the better Hollywood material from Korngold, Newman, and Steiner.

  1. NP: The Endless River (1994/2014) - Pink Floyd

A refill from the archives, raw, unfinished. The swansong to Richard Wright and to Pink Floyd in its various incarnations. A full-fledged PF album? No. Yet a heartbreakingly beautiful farwell to one of the greatest progressive rock projects in history.
Dim the light, put on the headphones and wipe away the secret tear.

Richard Volkmann (1815-1883) was one of those composers who was very popular when he was alive but has fallen into obscurity after his death. I'm listening to his RICHARD III OVERTUREand while it is dark the orchestration is filled with a melodic line that carries through the piece along with a beginning motif that is played by the lower strings and bassoon.

  7. Choral Fantasy Beethoven

I came across this for the first time 5 or 6 weeks ago on a Tanglewood concert blu ray and I've been addicted to it ever since listening to it 3 or 4 times a week. It is such a wonderful piece of music building from beautiful piano solo to spectacular orchestra and chorus. All in just 20mins, breathtaking!
  8. New World Symphony Dvorak

    Spectacular and beautiful.

Which version (orchestra/conductor) did you play, John?
I find it's one of those pieces that really change in tone with different conductors.
(Handel's Messiah would be another one).

  10. So this prompted me to finally check out CPO's catalogue intself. And of course it cost me money. smile

    I bought:

    Max Deutsch: Filmsymphonie Der Schatz
This is the re-recording of the score for a German silent movie from 1923 directed by Georg Wilhelm Pabst.

    Ferdinand Ries: Symphonien Nr 1-8
Ries was student and assistend of Beethoven. You may call his work epigonic. (Pastiche alarm! wink ) But I don't care.

I was playing the Phase 4 release with Antal Dorati and the New Philharmonia Orchestra. Do you have any particular favourite versions Martijn?

NP: SAINT-SAENS SYMPHONY NO. 2 (1859) A most interesting work. It begins almost like a viiolin concerto and then very abruptly it changes to a fugue. It sounds like it belongs in the mid nineteenth century genre. I never paid a lot of attention to Saint-Saens because of his sexual preference (little boys) but I've managed to put that aside and I'm enjoying his music.
