Pity the film isn't better -- Arnold deserved a better swansong for what was one of his best scores for the series.

    I think it's Arnold's best Bond score.

I'm going to have to listen to this one again because I remember finding it rather lukewarm! As of right now Tomorrow Never Dies and Casino Royale are Arnold's best Bond efforts.

Hans had no temp-track on Inception. I asked him about the similarities. He admitted to using the same intervals, but said he hasn't heard this track at the time.

We need more relationships where the director trusts the composer so much that they don't use a temp track.

But most directors have a difficult time talking to a composer about the needs and wants in musical terms so a temp track helps fill in the missing pieces. However, it should ONLY be a guide but after a while the director simply falls in love with the temp and demands that the final sound like the temp.

  1. Inception was just Hans and Lorne.
http://www.filmmusic.pl - Polish Film Music Review Website
  2. Probably so. (Poor Lorne -- will he ever get an Oscar nom in his own name? wink ) But that would make it more the exception than the rule in the house of Zimmer.

But on the temp track thing... I find it hard to believe -- particularly given the amount of recycled material throughout the Batman films, that temp laying isn't a part of the Nolan process. Whole sections of material are reprised verbatim -- with slightly altered arrangements -- across films. As for the QoS thing, that could well be true, but even if it was false, it's what you'd say anyway if you were Han Zimmer. (If I was a Hollywood composer at the moment, I wouldn't be admitting to anyone via social media the role of another composer's work in my process. One of their own recently got sued for doing that, successfully. No point poring fuel on the fire.)

I know it only comes down to an opinion but I just don't believe that Hans Zimmer hadn't heard the Quantum of Solace track.

And I think Michael's points made above are right on the money.

  3. The only suggestion Hans got was The Thin Red Line, really. And that was over the phone, not through Facebook smile

Inception was a case, where he was scoring the script, not the movie itself, so hard to talk about any temp-track influence. Basic suggestions, yes, but no temp-track if he didn't watch an edit when he was scoring the movie.

  4. NP: Inception (Hans Zimmer)

Now having said all that... this is one of the few recent soundtrack albums for a big film that just plays beautifully.

I wasn't suggesting Hans Zimmer gets his musical suggestions via Chris Nolan sharing on his facebook wall. I meant that if I was as clever as he seems to be, there's no reason for me to admit a musical influence to a fan of my music / film music journalist. wink

  6. Hans is usually very, very uneasy when you mention similarities to him, to any works. This time he replied in a very laid back manner.

I totally forgot how much four note danger motif is littered throughout Horner's The Perfect Storm. vomit Great score still but I'll be skipping "Coast Guard Rescue" from now on.

    Moving onto...

  7. Funnily enough, Coast Guard Rescue is my *favourite* piece from The Perfect Storm and, along with Samuel's Death from Legends of the Fall, may well be my favourite Horner action cue.

    Crazy!

With regard to Rocketeer action cues (and spectacular action cues in general), I'm more of a 'Zeppelin' man.

This obliterates every other Horner action cue known to man.

Simply because it's my favourite !!!! punk

I don't consider that to be an "action cue" though. However, it is one of the best scored scenes EVER!

How did it work this time?
I don't think it's that much better than CASINO ROYALE, but I liked the album a bit more than CASINO, which always wore me down about half way through.

Shame this composer isn't getting assignments anymore. Well, at least credited assignments.

    Check out 'Secretariat'. VERY GOOD.

He temps it with fresh Zimmer drafts which themselves are tempted from his previous scores or tempted with other composers' works so it's a temp within a temp within a temp.

Correction: quantum of solace, both score and album. The first one had some good action scoring, intense. p.s. boy you're fast in replying wink

Anyway i am glad that the franchise is - even temporarily, time will tell....-moving to somebody else, especially someone like Thomas Newman.

That is an action cue. It's used for the 'action' of stealing a spaceship. Which to me is the mother of all actions.

You simply don't do steal something like that without feeling some sort of huge adrenalin rush. tongue

Which is what Horner makes me feel every time. So yeah, action cue it is...

  13. It is good to mix it up... I'm sure Newman will be novel, if nothing else.

I thought Quantum of Solace was Arnold's best Bond score, too. I just listened to "Night at the Opera" after reading the recent exchange... if that wasn't temp for Inception, then it was certainly in the composers' minds. It's pretty blatant.
  14. "Stealing the Enterprise" is great, but it has it's slower moments and quieter parts. For a fairly continuous ride:

Oh. What I meant to add was that even though I thought it was his best Bond score, I'm glad he isn't doing the new one. Leave on a high and all that. Let someone else have a go. Skyfall is the first score in a very long time that I have just no idea what it will sound like. The only vaguely "action" things I can think of from Newman are in his Pixar scores, and I don't suppose it will be like them. Great kudos to Sam Mendes for holding out for Newman (needless to say, the producers wanted to retain Arnold, but I'm told Mendes actually said he wasn't prepared to do the film unless he could pick his own composer).

Well yes, escaping from a tavern should always be as exhilarating.

But nothing beats an escape which is futile. smile
