    NP: THE IMPOSSIBLE (Fernando Velazquez)

One of the best scores of last year. The main theme sounds like a mix between Delerue and Morricone.
    I am extremely serious.

I find it difficult to listen to that whole score because its so monothematic and I don't want to wear out the impact of that theme. But the end titles are my #1 favorite track of last year and one of my favorites of all time now.
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!

Oz: The Great and Powerful - Danny Elfman

Zzzzzzzzzzz... Elfman's been on autopilot for several years now and this is no different. Maybe if it had a great theme but the one you hear the most (at the beginning of the opening track) is terribly generic, sounding like about four different Elfman themes mashed together. I'd rather listen to Hellboy II, which has a very similar sound but is about five times more entertaining.

NP: POWER OF ONE (Hans Zimmer)

Ah....Zimmer in "ethnic" mode. It doesn't get better. Some of the source songs can grate a bit eventually, but the score -- and the Zimmer-penned song -- are brilliant.
    I am extremely serious.

Since it's a long time ago that SKYFALL was mentioned by anyone, I will not mention it either.

    THE REVENANTS | mogwai

Soundtrack to a French zombie series that was just released, based upon earlier tracks from the band. Very low key, even for Mogwai. Not so interesting as a focused listen but moody atmospheric background music. There's a very catchy motif in there though.Similar to the Explosions in the Sky sound but without long buildups and climaxes. The track at the end is at the whole other end, wild and loud. Shakes you awake so programme it out or you'll be awake again!

Interesting. I wasn't aware Mogwai had done a score proper.

I did this an injustice with my comments based on my cursory first listen the other day. It's actually really good.

Danny Elfman's score to Oz: The Great and Powerful is neither great nor powerful. Discuss.

    -Erik-

PS - I'm about 11 tracks into a 27 track album that is 67 minutes long. So far, I feel like I've been listening to this for hours. sad

It bored me to death. No thematic integrity, no special elements, nothing. Complete auto pilot. Next.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

It works wonders in the film; the male choir connected to the aftermath and chaos, the agonizing ostinato for the father's torments while trying to find his son, etc. Eveyrthing gains meaning after watching the film.

NP: Plunkett & Macleane - Craig Armstrong

There's some excellent tracks within a barrage of uninteresting stuff. "Unseen" has a superb burst of action energy. I love the dramatic choral rise at the end of "Ruby". "Rebecca" is noteworthy with its elegiac choir and string melody. "Business" is a brilliant blend of classical strings passages and techno pop rhythms. "Escape" is the EPIC piece that made Craig famous (but not before his excellent arrangement work on Romeo & Juliet).
  1. NP: Take This Waltz - Jonathan Goldsmith

"...a dreamy and highly original score..." says MovieScore Media's promotional blurb. It's certainly something that I've never heard the like before.

It's not really until the final score track, "Enduring", that I found something to like with this one. Interesting choice of instrumentation and/or effects to give the originality but it falls way short of something I'd want to listen to again.

I am sure some will like this - maybe for those who like trippy ambience perhaps.

    Wanted - Danny Elfman

I really love this score, surprising because I don't tend to like rock elements in my music. Somehow, Elfman makes it all seem seamless and the thematic material is just terrific. It helps that the album length is perfect at 48 minutes (45 if you skip the song, which I often do). Oz has been thoroughly washed out of my system.

Unlike you, I LOVE rock elements in film music. It is actually the more straightforward action music in this one that grates a bit. And I love the song.

Why can't all composers write "generic" action music that's this awesome?

Because you need to quote one of Williams' motifs from Raiders in order to do so. wink

  2. Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe - The Bible

Not half bad! A very reflective score, but harmonious and emotional. The themes, as far as I know, are a really collaborative effort between Zimmer and Balfe, so if anyone wonders, yes, he did something on it.

  3. NP: The Day The Earth Stood Still - Bernard Herrmann

A classic score for a classic film. The score adds so much to a film where not much really happens. But the direction and the score make this into a gripping story. And Herrmann's score adds a dose of believability to Gort, transforming a man in a foam suit to a lurching behemoth (in the right light anyway).

I am listening to the OST at the moment. The use of theremin adds a dimension to the score that's quite distinctive and makes for a difficult aspect to reproduce in any re-recording.

  4. NP: The Day The Earth Stood Still - Bernard Herrmann

I think that Herrmann was one of the composers whose music has benefited most from all the re-recordings that have been done over the years: archival original score recordings that have been brought to life by meticulous reconstructions and re-recordings have brought out a lot of the detail of the orchestrations in scores such as this.

Joel McNeely's re-recording of this score for Varese is a great example of how the composer's subtle orchestrations are brought to life, revealing details muddied on the OST by sub-optimal (by today's standards) recording technology. And revealing that detail more than compensates for the variations in the theremin reproduction in the re-recording compared with the OST recording. The theremin parts are definitely well reproduced here in this McNeely recording with only occasional detours from the Arista/Fox original.

Another great McNeely recording for another great Herrmann score.

  5. Iron Will is phenomenal.

OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL - Danny Elfman

I had to stop and come back to this. Anyone who likes Elfmanisms will enjoy it. A lot. It's okay. Probably about in the same ball park as JACK THE GIANT SLAYER for me at this point. It's not bad. There just isn't a lot there to make me want to come back to it. Perhaps repeated listens will change my mind.

  7. Lennertz is great to listen to when he does full-blooded dramatic films. But for these films like Identify Thief, not so much.
