This is an extremely boring album.

Get out. Not even the first 2 cues? "Quien puede detener la lluvia" and "El 25 de septiembre de 1828" ? The more dramatic pieces like those 2 that follow, "Regreso e Venezuela"
"Maria Teresa" and the magnificent choral "Ellos estan con nosotros" and its orchestral rendition "Muere el Mariscal" are also beautiful. Plus the Debney's POTC-inspired "El ultimo viaje". i think you should re-listen? At least these pieces only smile

GEORGE FENTON - the zero theorem

Amidst general craziness, electronics, noise, dubstep (all expected for this kind of film) there's pure, classical Gilliam atmosphere in the excellent cues such as: "the zero theorem main title", "beach romance", "inside your head", "bainsley leaves" and the mesmerizing piano and strings "Qohen Leth" one of the most beautiful pieces i've heard this year. The orchestral part of the score is Hermmann-esque and very refreshing to hear in 2014. Much impressed by this, your thoughts guys?

There's a big personal story that goes with this soundtrack that I can go into at a different time, but it's been YEARS since I listened to it. What a throwback!

  1. It is great indeed. About a year ago I was surprised to find a second volume on some shelf in a shop.

I want to create a playlist for my ipod, augmenting the original album with a few cues from the Deluxe Edition. I think "Ode to Harrison" is a given. Any other suggestions?

I opted for the Main Theme to end the album though. I never liked those End Title suites too much. This way it amounts to 60 minutes of music.

NP: THE EYE OF THE EAGLE: THE FILM MUSIC OF... (Søren Hyldgaard)

A fantastic compilation full of lush symphonic writing that I daresay would appeal to EVERYONE here. As well as some cool jazz licks and a little bit of Pink Floyd-y guitar in a track. If you haven't checked out this Moviescore Media release, I urge you to do so now.

Really great to find this on Spotify. A wonderful score and what a gorgeous "old school" romantic theme with The World Only Lovers See and a corking Main Title full off ethnic goodness.

  5. NP: Gorky Park (1983) - James Horner

I just discovered that I had never actually ripped that CD to my audio library. Also it does not seem to be on Spotify. So I had to resort to YouTube. I did not have the faintest memory of the music.

Electronica pop music. James Horner meats Giorgio Moroder. Or Tangerine Dream. The main theme does have some appeal to me but apart from that it seems largely forgettable. I won't upgrade.

The Maze Runner - John Paesano

When a composer I've never heard of scores a (relatively) big film, it usually turns out that he's the guy who washed Hans Zimmer's car or something and Jablonsky and Djawadi were busy, so what you gonna do? But this guy (according to the press release) is a proper classically-trained composer and his rather ambitious list of film music influences that he names on this score are Jurassic Park, Alien and The Thin Red Line.

Early days yet on the album... at least there's a theme (very James Horner-ish) and some very, very Giacchino-like action music. Not heard much like the three named influences yet. Let's see how it develops.

I can't help it but a little bit of me dies every time I hear some new name composer is influenced by Hans Zimmer. Them's the breaks I guess, like it or not.

Thin Red Line influence was confined to a bit of a Journey to the Line thing going on at the end. I suppose there was a slight hint of the action music from Jurassic Park. Didn't hear any Alien. But all in all, pretty enjoyable, and most of it is "proper" music. Quite Giacchino-like, as I said.

HARRY GREGSON WILLIAMS - The Equalizer.

Standard return to Tony Scott-like grounds for HGW. The piano and violin + strings bed main theme is dramatic and attractive as always, enjoy it in full in "alone", "mccall's decision", "on a mission", "a quiet voice", "the equalizer" the rest is heavy electric guitar on distortion-driven tracks + electronica.

Markedly different from the commercially released re-recorded score released by Silva Screen some years ago.

I always quite liked that theme to be honest.

I also realise that Brian Tyler isn't the best drummer who's also a film composer.
