Field of the Lost Shoes - Frederik Wiedmann

    Nice, if generic.

Yes but it's nice for a chance, to listen to a properly composed and arranged orchestral score, with coherence, central themes that drive the whole around instead of random wallpaper music we often get for this kind of films these days.

Do you think it's all orchestral? Some of the brass sounded a bit sampled to me, but I wasn't listening that closely.

No, i agree with you there's probably some samples in there too but it's so well mixed and arranged in the orchestra that doesn't sound synthetic almost at all.

A selection of fine, charming orchestral brilliance with romantic basis, Balkan and Eastern European elements, from OSVALDO GOLIJOV (Tetro, the man who cried, youth without youth). This, is film music.

PANU AALTIO (the man wrote the exceptional "home of the dark butterflies" in 2009 and Metsan Tarina a couple of years back) - Apache Air Assault. It's ridiculous what kind of effort and class he puts into writing music for anything, even this. Imagine how would a Nick Glennie Smith's score for something like that if he was actually a composer of Panu's level.

Why did you pick Nick Glennie-Smith who of all composers from the MV/RC mold is actually decent bordering on good at times? biggrin

I have to get to Aaltio.

Because this score in particular reminded me of a much more inspired and better Nick Glennie Smith. Aaltio's rest body of work has no relation to Glennie Smith or such a sound in general. Only this score. Nick is fine, WE WERE SOLDIERS is gorgeous. But he's often repetitive and doesn't take his scores to the next level, something's missing most of the times.

It is, but if you're not in the mood for it, it's also really fucking boring. It's not something I'd ever consider putting on if I was drunk, I'll put it that way. (Which is most of the time.)

Well, the story I've heard is that Glennie-Smith is not really that much into composing. The truth is that he got his first high-profile gig on The Rock based on the strength of his additional music on Bad Boys. Then while they loved some of the material, Bruckheimer, Simpson and Bay made The Rock a total mess of a process (and the truth is that Bay can be, as far as I understand, very rude to composers), which in a way traumatized Glennie-Smith to the point that he basically writes for his friends, mostly conducts (and loves that), does some smaller or bigger help mostly on Zimmer scores (heard he supervised the Da Vinci Code process after the 50-60 minute suite was written by the big man, though I don't trust that source anymore) and writes "songs for his girlfriend". Basically he's just not that into it anymore.

Pretty good. I hear influences from other composers, particularly Michael Nyman.

Half way through and to be honest I'm finding this totally un-engaging, dreary and boring.

"Forgiveness" is a great cue towards the end of the album, you should at least listen to that one.

    NP: THE GRANDMASTER (Shigeru Umebayashi)

I was not as taken by the film as everyone else, but the lyrical, string-driven sweetness of the score is quite good. I have to be in a particular type of mood, though.
    I am extremely serious.
