    once again nice review Alan
though I give it 3 stars smile

Cheers, Thomas. I think a rating of either 2.5 to 3 is fine. The synthy sounding parts lost it that half a star. The music itself could be a 3-pointer.

  2. Let me know what you think of both the score and whether you think the review reflects the score well or not.

I am a little surprised Tom as Age of Heroes is a MovieScore Media release.

If you saw the list of material to be done you'd understand.
    Tom

My favorite documentary music are the two Virgil Thomson did for Lorentz. The River, and The Plow That Broke The Plain.
    listen to more classical music!

  8. Todd Boekelheide has done some good documentary music. He has quite a few samples on his site.

Forever Young will be my next review. I'm listening to the subtle nuances of the material. It is much more than a syrupy love theme.
    Tom
    listen to more classical music!
  9. I'm thinking of changing my approach how to write a review. I can't follow the immense list of releases anymore, nor can I take the time to invest some knowledge into the subject (actually watching the movie to understand how it works in context). I tried just reviewing the ones I really liked, but turned back on that because I discovered that the larger releases (the ones written by the big composers) seemed to contain the weaker scores (hello summer releases), while the more obscure ones seemed to deliver a lot more interesting music instead. Which meant that I kept reviewing both of them in the end.

I know James Southall had somewhat a similar problem with this a while ago, so I'm thinking of changing my approach too.

I think writing short summaries (like most of us do in the now playing thread) is a much easier approach for most reviews. How many people go actually through a complete review anyway? Only the ones who really want to read everything about it, and I'm not that great a writer to begin with wink So perhaps writing 2 paragraphs about a score, but posting it as a review we find today is a much easier approach. That means I'll probably cover a lot more scores in the process (something I still do considering I listen to about everything no matter what) and still have the time to place more impressions in the process.

And perhaps just continue to review the ones I really want to write something about.

Still thinking about it, but I assume it would help my workload immensely in the future, plus be able to post a lot more reviews and thoughts about scores that I now dismiss due to lack of time.

so don't be surprised if you discover more reviews in the future, with albeit less written thoughts.

I think that would work if you just stick to the music and forget about the film itself.

Thanks Thor, Bregt and Tom, I'll definitely give it a go!

  11. Voila, 2 reviews written with the shorter method: so far I'm quite happy with it, I still do my thing, but I don't have to think about stuff just to make sure the review is long enough.

    - Diggstown (JNH)
    - Shark Night (GR)

    Enjoy

  12. I had a look at the second one. Good length and not too short. I remember listening to clips and thought it hideous.

it is hideous, a score not worthy to be called a score. It's just noise placed on the background!

  14. It's typical that of the two, the one you ended writing most about, is the hideous score. It's typical because you love to express the feeling how awful something is, as we all do. I want to read the extended unrated cut of that review one day if you know what I mean. biggrin
"considering I've seen an enormous debate here about The Amazing Spider-Man and the ones who love it, and the ones who hate it, I feel myself obliged to say: TASTE DIFFERS, DEAL WITH IT" - Thomas G.

true, the ones that are awful give you the biggest inspiration. And trust me, it's rated R this one wink
