  1. I mean I don't like songs in scores generally. Although there are some exceptions. Whether the song is new or not is irrelevant to me.

Aah! Well, I think the songs in LOTR are most welcome.

NP: Justice League: The New Frontier - Kevin Manthei

Pretty solid for a score performed mostly by synths. The music is a wonderful mix of Herrmannesque sensibility, 1950's film noir and the modern symphonic action scores of today. There are few live performances... the trumpet is live as are some of the woodwinds... and they work nicely to complement the synth orchestra and gives it some life. The action music is big and lively. A very enjoyable album and a pleasant surprise.

I love the piano variations of this score so much!

I second that! The score isn't anything special at all, but the piano variations are perfect.

The suite from ON DANGEROUS GROUND is also a ripper. Great to hear it in decent sound quality.

And you can find it in better sound with better performances on the Esa-Pekka Salonen album and Gerhardt's Herrmann compilation. I've never warmed up to the Prague Philharmonic... however, when they have ample rehearsal time and are recorded properly you get stunning stuff like the Tadlow re-recordings. El Cid looks like it's going to be a winner. Unfortunately, those earlier Prague recordings are mostly stinkers. If you ever want to hear what a constipated orchestra sounds like listen to a Prague recording.

I agree about their early recordings but I do think the Herrmann collection is very good (the Salonen is much better - but has a more limited range, so maybe for a novice Herrmann fan the Prague album is best?)

As a starter album... yes, I'll go with that.

    -Erik-

Also, I'm pretty sure the Salonen doesn't have ON DANGEROUS GROUND. (Not sure if you meant to imply that it did above.) The Gerhardt performance of the 'Death Scherzo' cue is of course the best of all worlds, but if I want an extended selection (with the viole d'amore solo cues), the 14 minute grouping on the Silva album is the one for me.

A film music masterpiece and brilliantly re-recording by John Morgan and Williams Stromberg with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. A great release and great music!

My mistake, Michael. I was thinking about the AWESOME The Man Who Knew Too Much Prelude that opens the Salonen album. Anywho, I still don't like the Prague ON DANGEROUS GROUND recording. Sure, it beats the pants off the sound of the OST but I still prefer to listen to the Gerhardt recording even though it is only the Prelude and nothing else The Prague stuff is like nails on a chalk board to me. crazy

Since it was one of their more recent performances, I find that particular suite on that compilation is roughly in the same calibre performance as in James Fitzpatrick's other recent recordings with them (True Grit and Sherlock Holmes). I don't share your aversion to their miking strategy and dynamics.

The Lord of the Rings:The Fellowship of the Ring Howard Shore
    (normal release)

While I like the first half of the album, I love the second half which just hits you with great cue after great cue (until enya warbles)!

Much as I like the songs, I do often find myself wishing that the end credits had been given over to some really unfettered long-form orchestral pieces. Sort of the LORD OF THE RINGS equivalent of the 'Epilogue' from THE FURY, or 'Survival' from PAPILLON, or the end credits of ENDURING LOVE. Maybe it would have clashed too much in tone with the rest of the score though. And there's no question, the average audience member soaked up the songs of the first and third films.

NP: More END CREDITS cues. Now 200 entries into a 500-long list.

  6. NP: 2nd SONCINEMAD Silvestri concert - Alan Silvestri

Talk of the Silvestri concert in Madrid last year meant that I just had to put this CD on - specifically the 11-minute Judge Dredd suite.

Great to have the music to hand but it doesn't come close to actually being there. Now where are those YouTube clips of the concert...

    Good choice sir beer
Did you go to the concert?
  7. I did indeed.

A great evening - I was about 4-5 rows from the front of the stage on the left hand side.

I'd paid a bit extra so that I could attend the special dinner after that concert. So the whole evening was just wonderful.

NP: Doctor Who Season 3 - Murray Gold

Watched the Series 3 finale earlier this evening in readiness for the first episode of Series 4 on Saturday.

Here's hoping that Gold's just as inspired for this series. At the moment I have "This Is Gallifrey: Our Childhood, Our Home" on repeat - one of THE best cues from 2007. It still makes me cry!

  9. Star wars: Return of the Jedi John Williams
    (4 Disc anthology)

One of a number of Williams scores that I could listen to on endless repeat. Just really really good.

In particular I think the kick in of the male voice choir in "final duel and...", although quieter than in the film, is my first memory of being able to appreciate film music, and what a memory (especially that scene) it is!

I love Summer Story! Well, most of them really. That Tours du monde thing is also beautiful.
  12. Oh Tours de Monde is Delerue's OTHER greatest score.

But I'm afraid for tonight, 'Ashton Arrives' will be playing on loop. Why did Delerue leave us? I need him for a short film I'm trying to write! sad
