For over 2 weeks now, I've had an annoying beep in my left ear, and since some annoying kid blew off a firecracker pretty close to me on that side during new years eve, I've been worried SICK if it'd be tinnitus and that that would be the cause (googles a lot about it, with very worrying stories).

Fortunately, I just came from the doctor, and he said the ear is just full of ear wax, which blocks the membrane and causes the beep. I didn't think that would be it, because it doesn't feel that way, so it's a HUGE relief! I've made an appointment for friday to have my ear cleaned, and then the beep must be gone. Can't tell y'all how happy I am!

As someone who was diagnosed with chronic tinnitus a year ago (and already deteriorating, now louder and in both ears), let me just say how lucky you are!! I wouldn't wish this f"#¤n thing on my worst enemy.

Maybe one day it could be treatable:

Aww man, that's horrible sad . I'm sure 'my' noise isn't as loud as yours of course, and it's only my left ear, but at one moment I almost accepted that it wouldn't go away (since my ear doesn't feel blocked at all), which gave me very stressful situations. I feel like I've had a glimpse of how it must be to really have it, let alone a chronic version! I feel for you man sad

I've also googled a lot about it, and it's weird how much difference there is in treating it. There are methods some doctors use in the Netherlands (expensive, but don't always work) but in general they tell you to learn to live with it, and in Germany they found some kind of cure (up to about 60-80%) for tinnitus when treated within the first 2 to 3 weeks, but that isn't exactly accepted elsewhere. Really hope there'll be some medical progress in the near future about this. I wouldn't wish this to my worst enemies.

That's very good news, hopefully they'll push on with these experiments until it is indeed a workable cure. I know they've been doing tests with 'fairly positive' results by way of electronics for a while, and I really hope that's the key.
  5. Just off to bed now and I can hear a tawny owl calling from the trees across the road. It's a regular sound and it's something I never tire of hearing.

How do you know it's a tawny owl? You sure it's not a barn owl or a dog-bothering owl or a small child gathering owl or a Clash of The Titans made of gold owl?

I recognise owl calls but I wouldn't know what kind they were?

I have a bird book that has a CD that features bird calls. I think it's on that. And I've had a listen to some calls on YouTube and bird sites.

    Cool!

Now what's the chance of capturing a photo? Slim I'd guess unless you had hours and days of endlessly watching.

I could sit and watch the wood through the front window - and sometimes I do, watching squirrels, treecreepers, woodpeckers, sheep(!) - but apparently tawny owls are nocturnal and so the chances of seeing one is slim.

You'd need some specialised equipment and a bucket load of patience.

There's quite a lot of wildlife around my way too, foxes, hedghogs, squirrels and lots of various birds ( except I'm rubbish at recognising what types they are ) and bats ( which probably reside in the local church belfry ). I've lived in this area for 15 years and the wildest thing I saw was a bird of prey ( again, I'm rubbish and don't know what kind? ) swoop down onto the pavement where it instantly killed a pigeon and flew off with it's body....I've never seen a bird of prey around here before or since then, it was like having a brief moment of David Attenborough magic happen before your very eyes.

  7. I wish I had some of the specialist equipment but I try to do well with what I have when the chance presents itself.

Birds are the most varied things we have here. We usually participate in the RSPB' Big Garden Bird Watch (which is this weekend) where we sit and watch the garden for one hour and note what birds we see. The feeders are stocked ready to go.

We would hope to see blackbirds, thrushes, house sparrows, dunnocks, wrens, robins, blue tits, great tits, coal tits, maybe even long-tailed tits, chaffinches, greenfinches, goldfinches, nuthatches, maybe even a woodpecker. Mostly it'll be one or two of each in the hour but we have counted 12 goldfinches at once fighting for supremacy of the seeds on occasions.

We regularly see buzzards overhead and Anne saw a sparrowhawk in the garden once. What you likely saw Tim was a sparrowhawk taking the pigeon.

  8. Pleased to get out of the house for only the 3rd time since the new year. Don't know if the back is improving or whether it is just the painkillers. Walked into town and back (maybe just shy of 2 miles) and don't feel too bad.

Seeing the doc on Friday for the results of the x-ray.

Glad to hear it, I have a couple of friends with back problems, not fun.

A Sparrowhawk seems to be the general consensus of friends I've told too, it just swooped down really fast and the whole thing was over very quickly, an amazing thing to see with my own eyes.

I recognise Buzzards, I saw one really close by perched on a fence when we were in Wales last year....it took off while my hand was still reaching for my camera slant

    He, he...

He's actually partaking in the National Prayers Breakfast in Washington, which is an annual gathering of religious, political and business men in Washington D.C. It's taking place right about now, with the Prez himself present.
