It must be the longest film in history if it accommodates all that... unless he's "done a New World" on Desplat. (Which seems unlikely, really.)

Why unlikely? He did it to Horner too and Horners "New World" ist really gorgeous...

But in terms of narration, Horner's score is a lot more descriptive of the story than other Malick scores have tended to be. The more typical malick score -- if we can say typical from two and a half observations - tends to be a more mood-driven score.

Ah, the cheering/jeering. Good old Cannes. This vulgarity is one Americanism we could do without importing.

So, the film does have DINOSAURS?! I'm still disappointed though, this film should have been 3 weeks long and been about nothing but DINOSAURS.

Nothing I've heard about the music of this film suggests that. But then I never knew love for Clint Mansell's pop-orchestral melodrama. biggrin

I just hope the film is much more clear-headed than FOUNTAIN. I watched it again after seeing BLACK SWAN, thinking it might have improved. No. It's a hard film to trash, because it's trying so hard to be an arty masterpiece. Part of it's problem is that there is nothing under the surface. The themes are on the surface. The stuff with Hugh Jackman in a bubble is great. The past is too under-developed, and the present feels like an episode of ER with the doctor getting revelations through skylights.

Sounds better than expected. Typical Desplat, but enjoyable and I'm sure that the main theme is the one played at 3:46 in the piano and strings.
  5. Sorry, my commentary was doubled.

Nah, it's all about the name tag.

    Mallick.
    Desplat.
Boom into glamorous stratosphere, Cannes, red wine, champagne, educated smug critics and viewers cheer onto multiple orgasms and stuff.

I can assure you, there's plenty of quarter wits out there who'll go ga-ga on name only for a cocktail like Mogwai, Kronos Quartet and Clint Mansell, in honour of something by Aronofsky.

But you're right. TREE OF LIFE as a film might be crap. (Incidentally this might make FOUNTAIN 'better' by default, but never 'good' or 'great' in its own right.) I do know for a fact though that it's original score was written with far more craft than FOUNTAIN's. I'll be the first admit it doesn't push the same sort of buttons in the process. wink

On a sidenote, no matter how fun it is for some people to diss The fountain, i thought it was an exceptional movie with an outstanding score; very successful combination and a score loved by a large public, also outer-film music borders. Excellent music.

Come, come. It gives me no great pleasure to do it. I have tried, twice, to get into the film and love it. Believe me, it would be better if I loved the film than be frustrated by it. wink

It's never fun to not like something that others do so much. I thought it was the emperor's new clothes - but then, I'm sure many say the same about Malick and Desplat.

  9. He's scored this year's Oscar winner, wrote a score for this year's Palme D'or winner... Desplat's having a visible year.

The more the merrier! smile I've yet to buy a score of his that I was disappointed with and I've amassed 18 so far, he is the most rapidly expanding composer* in my collection over the past year or so.

    *please no innuendo

I saw Tree of Life. I loved it! I was a bit sceptic because I didn't like The New World and also TTRL was a hard nut, but this one grabbed me instantly (except for the last few minutes perhaps). It's dreamy and hopeful, but the unease that I told about that I thought was in the music, is here as well. It's a festivity of light, images and music. It's a small story, but told in bigger scope of things. One of the ladies in a front seat said she wanted to crash her car and that she didn't understood anything. I said she didn't need to understand (it's not really a hard story though) but needed to experience and decide for yourself.

About the music, I think there's about 10 to 15 minutes of music from Desplat. None of the tracks on the cd are used in their complete form (but that was to be expected) but some are selected just for a second or 5, really! I'm not sure if there are pieces by Desplat not on the album, it could be, but the music often overlaps his style. The Lacrimosa piece by Preisner is impressive, and a piano rendition returns later on.

The dinosaurs are cute but it's an odd experience! dino

I knew they we're going to cut almost all his music from the film. If they used like thirty songs.

I like the samples of A Better Life. I love the Latin influences on it.
