My review of Mancina's August Rush, copied and pasted right out of my score reviews blog:

" Pop song fans will rejoice, but score fans will mourn. "

As a film, August Rush blew me away when I first saw it in theaters. The soundtrack, however, didn't. After first hearing Mark Mancina's emotionally moving score coupled with the film itself, I couldn't wait to go out and buy the soundtrack. Lucky for me, I didn't make that mistake, and listened to a borrowed copy belonging to my girlfriend. To the average listener, this soundtrack has everything there is to offer; all the pop songs are still there with all their vocals, etc. But the score? Well, where'd it go?

The score to August Rush on the OST is limited to the Main Title and the finale/climax of the film's musical journey, August's Rhapsody. Only two tracks. Even my favorite moment of the score is not included, a small cue entitled Arpeggio Intro on the composer's site, which can sadly only be heard there (though someone figured out how to extract an MP3 for me).

The album almost completely neglects the score, as most pop song-filled soundtracks do. It seems the album producer(s) figured people would only care for the pop songs, so that's all that was put in. It's really a shame that August Rush isn't the only score that has received unfair treatment such as this; many other scores suffer from this disease as well, scores for films such as The Lion King and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.

Overall, I'd say the soundtrack to August Rush is score-wise one of the worst I've ever taken the time to sit down and listen to. I'd say I want a full score release, but I know I'd be wasting my breath (or in this case, finger strength/endurance), as for a film like this, it's likely there'll ever be a score release.

that's the beauty of the internet, now labels can bring their music out on digital means as well. Scores that would have been lost in the process are now at least available this way. It is better than nothing smile

Is Mancina Comming back to business???

It seems in 2009 he has projects.
  2. I want him to make Twister 2, no seriously I love that music from the first. So a sequel sure wouldn't hurt.
"considering I've seen an enormous debate here about The Amazing Spider-Man and the ones who love it, and the ones who hate it, I feel myself obliged to say: TASTE DIFFERS, DEAL WITH IT" - Thomas G.
  3. Depends on the director.

    It'd go to Rabin anyway.
  4. Not if De Bont did it. Then it'd go to Mancina, rejected to Craig Armstrong, then to Silvestri who'd write a MV score anyway (Tomb Raider 2 anyone? bunny )
http://www.filmmusic.pl - Polish Film Music Review Website
  5. The Lost Medallion: The Adventures of Billy Stone (2011) (filming)
    Sheepish (2009) (post-production)
    Imagine That (2009) (completed)
    Hurricane Season (2009/I) (completed)

this doesn't sound too bad eh wink

Hurricane Season is a sport's drama (could be good), Imagine That a feel good Eddie Murphy rolleyes and The Lost Medallion is perhaps light disney adventure, but could be light promising as well

I sincerely hope he returns with a vengeance, he still is one of the better to have come out the MV school of clones

Whatever happened to Camille, does anyone know? There is a 3-minute clip of that on oDave Metzger's website and it sounds good.

He'll get my attention as soon as he's assigned for a Rated R action flick. Bad Boys was badass, Twister twisted, but even though the family stuff had its moments (Tarzan and The Haunted Mansion were pretty neat), I don't really care for him in that mode.
  6. Twister was R-rated?

Nah, it was PG-13 for 'bad weather', but this time around it would have to be a Rated R flick. I'm not taking any chances wink

You grin, but in its infinite wisdom, the British Board of Film Classification now frequently lists "Use of language" in its reasons for giving films higher ratings. Yes, DAMN any film that uses language. Bring back Buster Keaton!

Well, Brits have a long history with troubled and excessive censorship throughout all kinds of media. It wouldn't surprise me.

That's what i've seen analyzed in several documentaries i've seen this year. They were focused particularly on late 80's and 90's porn.

Oh, yes, with porn it was only with the advent of the internet that the censorship slipped away. On other matters we're surprisingly liberal, despite the distasteful efforts of our government of the last decade or so, which were somewhat successful in stifling the BBC for a while.
