The Russian composer SERGEI PROKOFIEV died at the age of 61 on 5th March 1953, at his funeral in Moscow there were no real flowers so paper ones were used instead, there were also no musicians available so a taped recording of the Funeral March from Romeo & Juliet was used at his funeral instead.

Incredibly, the Combemol, the branch of the Soviet secret service dealing with artists, intellectuals, musicials, writers, composers and literates in general, had provided a tape of Tchaikovsky's Romeo & Juliet. And as they accidentally inserted side B, the music actually heard was the 1812 Overture.

Pravda, as unable to distinguis any Russian composer from the other as anyone in the west, the following day released a statement that the cannon heard were actually exploding Firebirds, and they were promptly sued by Stravinsky. Pravda was purged, all attendants sent to Siberia, and the tape was burned, leading -in an epic miscommunication- indirectly to the fall of Nixon.

Unfortunately, Josef Stalin died at the same time ( a shame he didn't die a long time sooner ), in the leading Soviet Musical Periodical his brief obituary was relegated to page 116, the rest being devoted to the monsterous Stalin.

I want to say Tim, Thor, Erik that I've not forgotten about sending out the CD's. If I have an excuse its the lines are so long at the P.O. and I must go there because of the custom papers. I think after Xmas it won't entail standing in line for an hour and I'll do it.
