I love Windows 7 by the way.listen to more classical music! -

Windows 7 is taking a bit of getting used to - especially with the new layout of the Windows Explorer. But having a PC with a bit more muscle is quite nice!!
BTW, thanks to everyone who offered advice over the last few days. Helped me focus. And thanks to people who were helping on a more psychological level. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

What's the best program to use to convert mp3s to wma files? Does Windows Media Player do it? I used to have freeconverter.exe but now they want you to install a toolbar I've never heard of as part of the program - and I don't wish to do this. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Erik, I can't seem to find the app that you recommended some time ago that shows the properties of audio files within a tab in Windows Explorer. I found this one of the most useful additions I've come across.
And, does it work in Windows 7?The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

First of all, Alan, do you have the option of converting the actual uncompressed CD to wma? Converting mp3 to wma is a lossy converted file down to another lossy file. Your wma's are going to sound like crap.
Secondly, why exactly are you converting mp3 to wma? People still use wma?

I'm wanting the lossier files to save to a player of smaller capacity that's used exclusively for the car - so quality isn't too much of a concern because of the road noise, etc.
I'm wanting to use the 128kbps wma file format so that I can have more tracks on my 32GB Zen.
I know I'm bad - but I can get away with this because it's for the car. I suppose I could do 256kbps mp3.
Also, I have some files that are protected wma files that I can't now play now that I have moved them to my new PC. Though, I can play them on my Zen, so maybe I've already un-protected these. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

You could always do 160, 192, 224 before you opt for 256. Also, at each bit rate 'stage' you can set it to variable bit rate so that more complicated parts of the sound get higher bit rates while less complex parts of the sound get lower bit rates - all of which average out around the bit rate you've chosen (say, 160kbps).
Still, even if it's for use in the car, I wouldn't want low bit rates clogging up any of my devices. I'd sooner buy a bigger capacity device than opt for lower quality files! (Having said that, 32GBs is surely a substantial size for 256 or even 320 files? That's still quite a lot of music, and in good quality... meaning you can use it for other things... surely?) -

Not sure if this is a potential problem or just teething troubles.
Twice now the PC has completely frozen and I've had to turn it off at the main button. There's nothing of note that seems to precipitate this and the only thing that I can see say is that along with the freezing there's been a buzzing in the headphones.
I can't seem to find any diagnostic tool that can help look for any potential problem. Any suggestions? The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

What programs have you been using when it freezes? -
- CommentTimeAug 9th 2010
David was using Opera, watching a YouTube video and I was listening to some tracks with MediaMonkey. Maybe the buzzing in the headphones may indicate an audio glitch?
As far as I can remember that was about it.
Things in the background would have been Windows Defender and AntiVir.The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

If you heard a buzzing in the headphones, then it's probably the audio driver related problem or a problem with the audio software you were using. Try if it does it with windows media player or winamp too.
If it still persists, go to 'start', type 'device manager', find your audio driver and uninstall it along with any audio software that came with it (what brand and model is it?) and then go to their website download the latest driver and install it again, with the necessary restarts of course (one after you uninstall completely, one after you re-install).
Of course do every uninstall via something like REVO UNINSTALLER free.
If you have any problems finding which hardware you have, download free cpu-z from here http://www.cpuid.com/downloads/cpu-z/1.55-setup-en.exe, download and install. Run it and see all the info about your pc.
Also download the latest graphics card drivers from your websites, nvidia.com or ati.com (http://support.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDSupportHub.aspx) respectively.
Also i found that usually, downloading and installing in a new piece the latest directx helps in many such cases, you can find the latest complete package from microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta … laylang=en
After you install all this, make sure you defragment the hard disks and you check and clean the pc and its registry with ccleaner free.

I'll be off for a week or so but i really wish this will help, along with any other help from the esteemed mt members here

Oh and at one extreme case in the past when i also got those freezes, i found that opening the chasis and removing and re-installing the ram on the motherboard and the sata connection cables from the rear of the hard drives solved the problem too...don't know why, maybe static or dust? In any case don't do that if you haven't done it in the past; put someone who knows to do it; it's ridiculously easy if you know a staff or two, my 15 year old brothers breaks the pc in parts and puts it all back together in no timeLove Maintitles. Thanks, Demetris.
I had a look in device manager and audio details are Realtek HD Audio driver version 6.01.5972.
I'll take a look at your suggestions and give them a go.The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

I go to the Realtek site and see a whole bunch of drivers. I assume that the top one is for me?
BTW, when I use device manager to update the drivers does the system head off to the various manufacturer websites for these drivers? The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Well, supposedly but most of the times the device manager will tell you it's up to date and you don't need to update.
First go to start, type 'windows update' and make it search for updates then see if it finds a new driver for your sound card and install it.
Also you can try uninstalling it via device manager, rebooting and then let windows re-install it on its own via the device manager and try if it fixes your problem. If not, you can always try that free cpu-z software to tell you exactly which driver you need.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

Funny, but I can't see where in CPU-Z I can view the sound card details. I can see the graphics card details. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Also, I've just switched off Windows Defender: apparently there's a conflict between this and AntiVir.The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Hmm....did you try the windows driver / update thingies i told you before?Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -
- CommentTimeAug 9th 2010
Oh and about cpu-z, i was wrong you're right, i forgot it doesn't have a sound card tab.
Try this:
The second way to find out what kind of sound card you have is to click on the Start button, then click on Run and once the Run box opens, type DXDIAG. Now click on the Sound tab up at the top and the name of your sound card will be displayed.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

This is why i hate on-board devices Anyway, try:
1. windows update for any sound card driver updates
2. if it doesn't work, remove and uninstall it from revo uninstaller (its software, if present), and from device manager compeltely, reboot and make windows find drivers and re-install it.
If this fails, try this one http://download.cnet.com/IDT-High-Defin … 97119.htmlLove Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

Any Opera users here?
Can anyone suggest a fix so that I can use the Amazon mp3 preview function? I remember I had the same problem before but I can't remember whether this was with Opera or Chrome. Whichever one it was, the way to fix it was to have the browser behave as though it was like IE so that the site visited would behave properly. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

I've answered my own question - I remembered what I did.
When in Amazon right click and choose "Edit Site Preferences" and select the "Network" tab. And in the "Browser Identification" part pick "Mask as Internet Explorer" from the selection. I can now play the mp3 previews. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -
