  1. Cheers, Martijn.

I'm a bit of a thickie on this. I had read a general article that mentions having to add the router to the cabling that includes the modem. But it sounds as though this article assumed that the modem would be needed.

I've found online a set up schematic (not supplied as a hard copy with the router) showing just the router between the socket in the wall and the PC.

Now I'm wondering if I remember the user name AND password that's automatically filled in when I connect to the internet because I have a feeling that I'll be asked this when the router tries to configure things tomorrow.

Anyway, we'll see. I may be in touch again tomorrow via phone.

slant That IS pretty much is requirement, yeah... If you lost that you will need to call your provider's help desk to have it reset...(if you set up the new egar as the modem, that is. The old SpeedTouch of course should retain its settings should you opt to re-use that...which of course isn't recommended when you've new gear in!!!)

I stopped my automatic log in midway through the process and tried what I thought was the password. And it worked! So, that's one less thing to worry about!

How is it going? I love the feeling of sitting in front of new pc's unboxed!
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  3. I hate it!

I've replaced all the hardware and connected all the wiring. I'll see if it works and configure the network after lunch.

This is why I like Macs; they work straight out of the packaging without all this fuss!

Still, I'm not an Apple fanboy or anything. Honest.

If you buy a pc with genuine software installed, desktop or laptop (like my new lenovo ideapad y550 which i really like) they too work out of the box. Unbox it, push the power button and enjoy.

Then that also gets my approval!

I've been looking to get a non-Mac laptop, so something like that would be ideal.

You get great stuff these days (duos, or the i family, 3-4 gb ram, dedicated graphics card, bluetooth, usb, hdmi, wifi, 250-320gb sata discs etc) for just around 500-600 euros which with your father's discount (if applies here) it'll be even less.

'Discount' is a bit of a misnomer, it's more of a 'proportionate tax reduction at the end of the fiscal year relating to business purchases and expenditures.'

But yes, it does make it somewhat easier to buy these things!
  4. PC is switched on and running "straight out of the box". I just need to create some recovery discs and then I'll try to connect to the internet...

  5. Computer is linked to the internet - and router seems to have been installed.

Now to see if I can link any peripherals...

you must have the courage to change Alan
    listen to more classical music!
  9. It was more out of necessity more than anything else. My old PC was just becoming so slow.

I've now got rid of all the rubbish that cam preinstalled with the computer - especially the Norton Security Suite - and downloaded all the useful apps. And Avira AntiVir security.

Trying to get to grips with Windows 7 is going to take a while.

  10. I have another question.

I' ve just taken the slave drive out of my old PC. The one with all my music on. Do I just install it into the new PC and when I switch on the PC it will install automatically?

And will there be wiring for me to use in the new PC?

  11. And, the format of the new PC is to have 500GB for "data" and 500GB for "programs". I assume it's best to keep this separation for the smooth long-term running of the machine?

Well, it depends. What connectivity does your older hard drive have? Most newer hard drivers are sata, the older ones were this thing here: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c … -cable.jpg if the older one looks like this, it's possible that your new hard drive won't have this kind of connectivity. If it does however, yes, you turn the pc off, you plug it in and normally it'll show up otherwise you'll have to set it as a slave or a master, depending on your setup (which is pretty easy, you just remove some plastic cap and put it on another set of pins on the back of the hard drive).

  12. The drive I've just taken out does have this port for the drive so it looks like I won't be able to put it in the new PC. Looking at the drive itself it says it's a Maxtor "500GB ATA/300 HDD". That looks like it puts that thought to bed.

My next question is whether there is some sort of case/cassette that I can add this drive to so that I can use it as an external drive?

  13. My alternative would be to buy a SATA drive to install.

Yeap, granted that your motherboard has sata which is 99% sure. What make and model is it?

There is, you can go to the nearest pc store with your hard drive and they'll find something for you.

  14. Cheers, Demetris. That's probably what I'll do.
