I've just tried to switch off the PC and it went into a cycle of rebooting back on for a few seconds then powering down. It did this a couple of times. And it flickered a light and affected the router.
Looks like I may have an electrical problem in the PC. I'm going to check the connections inside and out.The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Seems the most recent problem was a coincidental power grid interruption.
The PC had to do a disc check and there were a couple of errors. Now I have a "ButtonMonitor has stopped working" warning...whatever that is. And now I'm getting corrupt disk warnings. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

After showing a series of file structure corrupt/error warnings after the power outage I did I disc check on the C: drive and it showed up some bad sectors. Doing this seems to have solved the problem of the warnings appearing.
I need to see if the DOS screen check that seems to happen when I power up the PC still appears. See you in a minute. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

PC seems to be working okay for the moment.
Apparently there was a power interruption in the area and that seems to reeked some havoc with some of the inner workings of the computer. Yeap, power supply or graphics card, what my initial thoughts were; didn't know you had a power cut!
Alan,
go into windows
go to start - run
write down "cmd" and hit enter (without the quotes of course)
write the following and hit enter: "chkdsk c: /f"
it will run your disk for errors and correct themLove Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

If it is not one thing it is another!
I'm assuming that this has nothing to do with me or my set up. But when I went to log into my Freeserve account at Orange.co.uk once I clicked OK after putting my log in details Opera popped up a warning that suggested that the page I was going to was on a blacklist. I paid attention to the warning and backtracked away from the site.
Does this mean that this email is now useless?
Or should I wait and keep trying over the next few days/weeks to see if this status changes? All my Amazon, SAE, etc emails go to this account so I can't keep tabs on the status of orders, etc.
I can't seem to find anything on the web to suggest a more general problem. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Looking at previous and similar problems people have had with Youtube in the past I'll leave it a couple of days to see if it resolves itself. It looks like either there is some sort of malware infection on part of Orange's site (maybe a dodgy advert?) or there's a false-positive hit with the AVG Opera use as part of their protection.
Either way, it looks like someone else needs to sort this one out!

I need to spend some time formatting how my Avira anti-virus scans my computer. 605,000 items scanned!
Probably mostly all the music files and all the associated iTunes files. Music and image files don't tend to be places viruses hide. So if I can exclude *.mp3 and *.jpg files from the scan (if that is possible) then it should not take too long. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

I have a question about "blocking of autorun.inf" warnings from my Avira anti-virus software.
I understand what autorun.inf does and I understand that Avira blocks this automatic run of storage drives such as USBs (but not CDs or DVDs) to protect my PC.
But I am wondering why Avira is coming up with an "Autorun Blocked" warning when I do not have any USB/external drive attached? The warning includes the following information:
"Access to the file "Y:AUTORUN.INF" was blocked"
I don't have anything mapped to "Y" and I am assuming that this drive letter may have been ascribed to a USB, mp3 player, etc I have plugged into the PC at some point.
This happened yesterday for the first time and then again this evening. Between both episodes I did a full system scan using Avira and nothing showed up. Malwarebytes' Anti-malware also showed nothing. I'm pretty sure I don't have anything nasty onboard and I am wondering whether there's a glitch in a recent update from Avira?
Any comments? The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Cause many viruses install an autorun.inf on external flash drives / disks etc and infect your computer so most antiviruses are programmed to automatically block such autorun.inf files just in case. Ignore.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

If anyone uses CCleaner to keep their PC free of temp files and to empty their cache, etc and you use Opera beware that you modify the settings before running it when you update to the most recent version (v3.05).
There are several "improvements" to this, one of which is to set as default very aggressive settings for Opera that includes deleting cookies. I ran CCleaner without realising this and all my cookies were deleted and it messed up my Amazon Downloader (appeared to actually delete it). Just wasted a significant period of time getting things sorted.
When updating to v3.05 of CCleaner if you open the programme and then move to the Applications tab on the left-hand side you'll see for Opera (as well as Chrome) "Internet Cache", "Internet History", "Website Icons" AND "Cookies" are all selected. Deselect "Cookies" and that should prevent all your automatic log-ins, etc from being wiped clean. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Intermittent problem. Working on desktop and computer appears to just switch off. But power light still on with no response keyboard or mouse. Needs to reboot by holding power button until unit switches off.
Switching PC back on there appears to be no problem. I'll monitor problem but is there any diagnostic tools I can use to check status of PC or an events log I can check to see if I can learn what the problem was/is?

Over the last day or two I've had a problem with always being prompted to install Amazon's mp3 downloader (needed for album downloading), even though I know that it is already installed.
I emailed them last night about it, expecting my query to be answered by a general email from somewhere abroad. But I actually got a call this morning from someone at Amazon and we reviewed the problem to try and get to the bottom of the issue!
I think we managed to understand the problem and resolved things. On this ocassion, a big thumbs up to Amazon's customer services. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Trying out IE9 at the moment and I quite like what it has done to the look of this site. Rash may be a better phrase than brave perhaps!?
It seemed to be okay for the brief time I used it. What's more of an issue is something like Windows' SP1 for Windows 7. I usually keep up to date with all the updates that Windows puts out in order to plug up their holes and reading around if you keep up to date with those then some people say that you don't need this SP1.
But it's difficult for someone like myself to really know what to do with these sorts of things and I feel that it's always best to take advantage of these updates as they come along since it's difficult to decide which updates to take and which to ignore. Obviously, updates that are not relevant do bloat the OS of a PC.
Since updating yesterday with SP1 firing up the PC does seem to take longer than before so I'm seeing a bit of negative issue with it already. I need to go through what loads during startup - with CCleaner - and google them to see if I can stop anything.
I've got things like the following starting up and I'm wondering if I can actually delete some of the "bloatware"(?) that Dell put on my PC:
"Dell Webcam Central" - WebcamDell2.exe
"DellSupportCenter" - sprtcmd.exe
"Desktop Disk Tool" - RoxioBurnLauncher.exe (I don't even use Roxio)
"Adobe ARM" - AdobeARM.exe
"QuickTime Task" - QTTask.exe
"iTunesHelper" - iTunesHelper.exe
"Adobe Reader Speed Launcher" - Reader_sl.exe
"Quickset" - Quickset.exe (a Dell program)
"SysTrayApp" - sttray64.exe
"SynTPEnh" - SynTPEnh.exe (in a Synaptics folder)
"IgfxTray" - igfxtray.exe
"HotKeysCmds" - hkcmd.exe
"Persistence" - igfxpers.exe
"Dell DataSafe Local Backup" - DSUpdate.exe
"Launcher" - Launcher.exe (in a Dell DataSafe Local Backup folder)
"OpenOffice.org 3.2.lnk" - quickstart.exe
Maybe these may not have any impact on the startup speed when I switch on the desktop, maybe it's the depths of the OS that determine this at this stage in the startup, but when I open my account perhaps disabling some of these could marginally speed up the process?
I don't really want to do a System Restore to before the SP1 was installed as it hasn't broken anything as far as I can gather. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

I wish that browser developers would stop tweaking and tinkering with the way their products are presented to users. Okay, I understand that there needs to be updates to improve things "under the bonnet" but to change things like the layout Opera's Speed Dial is just annoying.
This is on top of the "Super Patch Tuesday" updates for Windows (as well as an Intel update) that amounted to 20 individual updates today that took just short of 3 hours to download and install (not sure why it took so long as it "only" took 90 minutes on the desktop).

Talking of external hard drives, is there a reliable external drive that doesn't need an external power source? I have a feeling that the power requirements would mean "no" in answer to my question, but I thought I would ask here before going out into the real world. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -
