  1. Imagine the scenario:

Someone is directed to a website of a composer who has web-based audio cues to listen to. It appears to use some Flash-based technology to play these tracks. Examining the browser's cache shows up the mp3 files for the tracks and right-clicking on the filename/file path means that the file can be saved to the PC.

But, the file cannot be played by any media-playing program tested nor is there any information displayed in Windows Explorer save for the file same and the file size. No amount of re-naming file (file name or *.mp3 extension) helps. In the file's details there is a chance that the file may be blocked because it has come from another computer but even removing this does not help. The file cannot be converted to anything useful because it is not recognised as an mp3.

    What is the problem?

  3. A question about wifi channels and neighbours.

Would I gain benefit from changing my wifi channel as my neighbour is using the same one?

My signal strength is about -45dBm on channel 6 (a factory default I believe) and my neighbour also uses channel 6. I am picking their signal on a wifi analyser that I am trying with a strength of about -85dBm.

Our connection download speed is about 6 Mbps (which is average).

But I am wondering if I would be best moving away from the default channel 6 to a cleaner channel?

Somehow I've managed to change some setting in my computer. Before I could copy a link to an email a person could just click on the link. When I copy it now it just comes out plain type.

    How can I change this?

    Hell yes.

If you have an android. I can recommend this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta … &hl=en
  4. Thanks for the comment Caliburn.

It was using the app that you link to that I was able to get an idea of any wifi networks around our house. I even went out and walked around the house (my own personal tri-corder!) to see if how the wifi network "landscape" was.

I did change my own wifi router channel away from the factory default to another one, away from the channels used by others. Unfortunately, I've not seen the neighbours using their network since I changed! But, when they eventually do, I'll be well away from any potential interference.

  5. I have another question...

I've just opened the "OrangeCD Catalogue" program on my PC: this is my CD database that I have been using for a number of years. It's a purchased program that I know is reputable - Martijn uses this as well I think.

It's been running fine all this time but today when I ran the program my avast! anti-virus software threw a wobbly. It looked like the program set off the "AutoSandbox" function in the anti-virus software, highlighted as a program with "low file prevalence/reputation". When I looked at the AutoSandbox part of the anti-virus software I could see that the program *.exe file has been placed in the "files that will be excluded from automatic sandboxing".

I assume that this latter comment is because I have said that the OrangeCD Catalogue program is one that I am happy to run.

My question is this, is this likely to have been a false-positive flag perhaps as a result of a recent update to the anti-virus software definitions that now detects this program (for whatever reason) as a threat? I can't see any other reason for this to happen: I haven't updated the cataloguing program at all.

Actually, Alan, I have the very same setup...but I'm not at home right now! smile

I'll have a look when I get back: see if I can replicate the problem. Which version of OrangeCD are you running?

    smile

The version of OrangeCD I have is Version 6.4.3 Build 15202

The current details of my avast! is Program version: 7.0.1474 with virus definition: 121125-0

In avast!, in the "Additional Protection" section, AutoSandbox is enabled and all boxes are checked. "C:Program Files (x86)OrangeCDdadbapp.exe" appears twice in the "Files that will be excluded from automatic sandboxing".

Alan, I'm on OrangeCD 6.4.8 and the same version of Avast as you.
I can't seem to replicate the issue.

Whether I add dabapp.exe to the exception list or not (it wasn't on there to start with), it won't be picked up by the Sandboxer.

I guess -if it keeps on happening- a workaround could be is to switch the AutoSandbox Mode from "auto" to "ask", so at least you'd be able to control the Sandbox, but this is definitely a puzzler!

    Thanks for the comment, Martijn.

It only happened the once. I think that I may have responded to the prod by avast! by telling it that dadbapp.exe was for a legitimate program - which is why, I assume, that it now appears in the "Files that will be excluded from automatic sandboxing" part of the avast! FILE SYSTEM SHIELD SETTINGS part of the anti-virus program.

Perhaps a previous definitions update triggered a false-positive but a subsequent update reversed the false-positive? Though I can't imagine that avast! will have spent anytime sorting out a potential false-positive for such an obscure program (unless the trigger is common to several different programs).

    If all that makes sense?

Maybe best to reinstall the OrangeCD? I do not know the program though.
  8. Folks, I bought a new PC a few weeks ago.

I compress my music files because I can't tell the difference between a 128 mp3 and CDA. I just can't.

I use Windows Media Player and it just dawned on me that I forgot to change the standart setting from wma to mp3. Now deleting my latest addition would mean a lot of work. Since I cannot hear any difference and my flash player is fine with wma, too, I thought - w. th. h. - just have it as it is. What do you think?

  9. I'd keep with what you have - if your player can take the wma go with it. You have 128 wma? That's better than 128 mp3, so you are ahead?

The only issue is whether you would find a problem with compatibility at a later point.

  10. I notice that a lot of new PCs/laptops are coming with Windows 8 pre-installed. If it's not possible to buy one with Windows 7, is it possible/easy to switch off the things that make Windows 8 Windows 8?

I am sure there will be laptops sold with no os at all on them? They do it here, it's legal and formal.

Thanks again for your help, Demetris.

I am sure that you can get computers with no OS but I would still need to spend additional money for a new OS. From what I read, computer manufacturers get OS licenses very cheaply and so it costs them next-to-nothing to have them installed - and, I suppose that these no-OS computers are only marginally cheaper than computers with an OS.

I don't want to have to start installing new OS systems, I don't want to have to buy a computer from a specialist store, all I want is to find a computer running Windows 7, uninstall all the bloatware, tweak it a bit and then wrap it for Christmas!

  14. Hello folks! wave

I want to stream my mp3-music from my PC to a little stereo in the next room (5m distance, one wall). When looking for a solution in which direction should I look:

    buetooth?
    wlan?
    powerline audio extender?

    Thanks in advance!

No, there is only a simple analog line-in. I would need some kind of adapter anyway.

You can just use a regular audio cord from your PC to your stereo. That's what I do:

I thought about bluetooth. There are BT-line-in thingies by Logitech and Philips.

A permanent cable would have to be layed elaborately, including drilling a hole through a wall.
On the other side, there is no need for the cable to be there permanentely. Maybe the simple way is the best indeed.
