I need some help viewing a specific file format.

Someone has sent me an attached file and their expectation is for me to view the documents (they are things for me to sign and return). However, when I try to open the document it opens in Notepad and it is just gibberish.

The file format is *.msg. I've searched for this format and how to actually view it but it looks like it's really difficult for someone without Outlook to be able to do so. I have asked the sender to send me the documents again in a form I can view (PDF?). Is this probably the best way forward? I don't use Outlook.

Also, this person is a PA for someone else who has probably sent them the documents for forwarding to me. Is the PA forwarding the wrong thing to me (e.g., the message sent to them) or is the documents just in the wrong format?

It doesn't matter now. I used an online converter and it seems that the PA has sent me the mail message sent to her asking her to send the documents to me for signature.

Looks like she's forwarding the message containing the attachments.
Your suggestion really is the proper way forward: request her to resend/forward the pertinent messages as e-mail. NOT as attachments.

Edit: never mind. You already sorted it out.

  2. Cheers Martijn. It took a bit if searching but it is good to know that I got to the same conclusion as your good self.

I found an online converter for MSG to PDF files and the resultant conversion did turn out to show that it was the email message that had been sent.

I am assuming that proper conversion of the MSG file would have resulted in the original message and any attachments being converted and being viewable?

I would assume the wrong file was sent by mistake.

For your info Alan if you look in drop box there is a new file that I sent to someone else but your welcome to investigate it if you wish.

    The original message, certainly.
    Attachments: I'm not so sure!
I would assume you'd need a paid converter for that as it assumes a lot more functionality than basic text decoding.

So again: you made exactly the right move.
(In fact I find it a little unprofessional to send through emails as attachments to a third party).

If you remember Tom, you have to actively share it with me so that I can gain access.

Nearly there Tom. I accepted your invitation to share the "Orchestral Album" folder but there seems to be nothing in it at the moment.

If you could put the file(s) of interest in your Dropbox folder on your PC then that should sync with my own Dropbox folder marked "Orchestral Album".

  7. I have just done a partition backup of my laptop using some new software.

Am I right in thinking that this is a disc image? I believe that this backup has all my files and system in a form that can be used to recover the current state of my computer should things go wrong - individual files can also be recovered using the software's own explorer function. Does this sound correct?

Also, with regard to backing up files/folders, I was also going to do a files/folder backup too. Do I need to do one and what would the benefit be of having both the partition and a file/folder backup in terms of being able to recover data?

I've had a couple of complaints about overlapping on my blog using Outlook but Opera and Chrome work just fine. Is there anything I can do with Wordpress?

  8. Tom, I don't use Outlook so can't offer any advice. Sorry.

I know I didn't make myself clear yet again. A person who tried to access my blog and uses Outlook encountered problems with overlap. I use Chrome and it works fine with my blog.

  9. I think that you explained yourself quite well the first time. But, do you mean the email and calendar software from Microsoft? Are they trying to access your blog via the link they receive in an email and when they get to your blog they have a problem?

Or are they viewing a page from within the email in Outlook?

    Yep.

Tom, have you the comments that are posted to your blog set to automatically upload? Or have you it set so that you have to approve or deny each comment?

I have mine set so that I have to review each comment before they appear on my blog. This means that any comments that the spam filter misses, I can delete myself without them ever appearing on the blog itself.

Does anyone know if in a multipaged word document you can have a couple of pages in landscape and the rest in portrait?

Or is there a way to flip a table or form so that it will appear in landscape in a word document?

I have to make a file of different assignments and some are forms in landscape. I prefer having one document, but if it's trouble I could add them as attachments.

Yes, that's possible. You have to divide your document in sections. You can add section breaks and then change the page orientation. Very easy from Office 201 onwards.

To change page orientation, there's also a button in the Ribbon. Just have your cursor in the section you defined

It's a message that looks like a person has a problem, but it isn't. When you click on the user, it'll bring you to a website for advertising and other useless stuff. That's the sole reason this "user" (spambot) posted that message. smile

  11. I have just signed up with a web hosting provider and am hoping to use WordPress to generate the website with. I am hoping that knowing my way a bit around the WordPress dashboard I can have a head start generating the site.

But I have no idea yet how to have what I put together using the Dashboard appear on any website I have.

Firstly, would anyone be able to help me in these early stages? And does anyone know of any documentation that can help me understand my situation: using WordPress to create a website with my own domain.

BTW, this is work related rather than anything to do with my Reel Music blog.
