Seriously, there's 3 or 4 cues which are good action but nothing new, still very enjoyable. You can buy these off iTunes or something, individual tracks. I am now on my 3rd listen, the rest is disposable.

Sucks for you then. I really can't be bothered to defend against negative comments any more because I really don't care. No matter what I say, someones opinion is still their opinion. beer

Now, that's not a very contributing point of view is it? I am just asking why you think it's such a kick-ass score, nothing more. Imagine what reactions we should be getting proportionately if First Knight was release today, for instance.

I thought it worked extremely well in the film as well but it's not very stimulating on CD.

Über-unoriginal theme plus some okayish atmospheric music appropriate for the film. Can't say I'd want to listen to it outside the film though.

I can see why many people won't be into this stuff, it's quite a difficult listen to go through if you are not particularly fond of minimalistic electronic approaches as that, Solaris, Asche & Spencer etc.

While there´s not a "Miami International" or an "African Rundown" in Quantum of Solace, the big action cues are pretty solid ("Time to Get Out", "The Palio", "Pursuit At Port Au Prince", "Target Terminated" shocked ). I agree it lacks a main theme as good as Casino Royale´s "Vesper´s Theme" though. Maybe the more dramatic stuff isn´t as good as in CR; but it´s nice to hear reprises of CR´s love theme. I´m pretty sure things will get better once we´ve watched the film.

Almost missed my chance to give my agreement on Alive and Les Misérables. Gorgeous scores, both of them. And I'm not sure I'm in any rush to get Quantum of Solace, because then I'll feel like I have to jump in the discussion. Is this turning into the most talked-about or controversial album of the year or what?

NP: The Outer Limits 3-CD limited box set, Dominic Frontiere
Wow, this is good stuff. Not just generic "creepy" TV music (as I might have expected, never having seen any of the show), but at times truly melodic and fun. I don't think a note of this extensive box set is out of place or unwelcome. I think I'm really becoming a fan of Mr. Frontiere after what I've heard on his other recent releases, such as Hang 'em High. I hope the limited editions of his stuff keep coming.

I wouldn't. Maybe above Die Another Day but it has been a while since I've listened to that score. But I wouldn't say Solace is in the same league as Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough or Casino Royale.

Arnold told at the WSA that he didn't use the Bond theme very much because he doesn't feel Bond is ready for it, plus, the Bond theme appearing would be a bit too much jolly already. Or something like that. Then he started about the bananas and the fax machine.

Wait, wait, wait... wasn't that the SAME reason he gave for not using it in Casino Royale.? At the end of that film, he became BOND and the theme was played. So, quiet with this "he's not ready for it" BS just use it to its full potential.

Hey, I don't get it. I like it on first listen, unlike the last two, and Erik and Demetris hate it. (And as always, never in half measures - they have to REALLY hate it too.) It's like it's a new Desplat score or something. wink

    NP: Black Stallion Returns (Delerue)

A score that we could mostly agree is better than either of Arnold's recent Bond scores. biggrin

I'd say, to be honest, whether it's a good or bad call, the issue of whether the Bond theme makes an appearance probably was decided by the director. It's such a big call that I doubt Arnold had an entirely free hand there.

Let's just say we are never meant to actually like the same thing smile. As for Erik, i don't think he showed anywhere that he hates the score. Neither do i; what irritates me is the yet again fuzz-destruction of the board with yet another new score that is supposed to be the apocalypse but eventually nobody talks about after 2 months time. That and the fact that i put it into stop after 6 listens until i watch the movie 'cause i really can't bear to go through the pointless underscore or the horrendous song just to get 4 good action cues again. I can play CASINO ROYALE instead which is - like Erik said, one of the best 2006 scores in my opinion as well and ages beyond this QOS mild effort.

Then we must be enemies! cool

I know you hate it, but I really like the Santaolalla-style moment actually. Adds a nice texture to the score instead of the typical piano-and-strings for all dramatic scenes. I suspect the music has something to do with the new girl (the Ukrainian beauty), and the specialised guitar sound gives her a very different feel to Vesper, whose theme is more traditionally voiced in the score. It reminds me of a cue towards the end of Iglesias's THE CONSTANT GARDENER which I always thought would do well in a dramatic moment for a Mission:Impossible or Bond film.

Which is utterly ridiculous. This is James Bond! It's like Indy without his theme. Yes, I know, Spielberg requested less of it in Last Crusade but at least it was still there. 6 or 7 times if I can recall of the top of my head which is just fine by me. But on the QOS album the only time we hear any samples of the Bond melody is during the quieter moments... which aren't bad... but not nearly as mind blowing as its use in - lets say - the high octane "Come in 007, Your Time Is Up" in The World Is Not Enough. Now that's a pure Bond cue that I would have loved to hear in the new score!

NP : SPARTACUS - Alex North

Amazingly complex rhythms, quite simply a classic! I've always loved this score but at the same time I can hear what puts many off of North's music. He's never been the most accessable of composers but patience and persistant listening pays off in m view.

Erik has a point. All should-be-big and kick-ass major hollywood blockbuster scores (i.e. the ones coming as sequels in big, established franchises) lately end up mediocre at best and forgettable eventually with the excuses about it coming in thousands each and every time. I don't get it! Why should everything have at least one major flaw with it? why don't they write as they can and as they should? WHY?
