JAMES NEWTON HOWARD - the happening

A very strong thriller score, packed with immerse energy and captivating atmosphere, colored by the impressively eerie cello soli and the beautiful "love" theme. One of the most notable entries for 2008, imo.

NP: Ftina Tsigara (Cheap Cigarettes)~ Panagiotis Kalantzopoulos

Pretty sure nobody here knows about this composer, except perhaps Demetris. He is Greek, quite young and very talented. This is the soundtrack of a greek movie which came out a few years ago.

You love this score don't you? I find it very difficult to listen to.
  2. NP: The Best of Dragon Quest - Koichi Sugiyama

Selfmade compilation from the orchestral soundtrack albums of the Dragon Quest videogames. I basically took all the best cues from Dragon I to VII and filled the CD until there was no more room. I cannot describe how much I love this music, very classical sounding, always melodic, with superb orchestrations and performances by the London Philharmonic. Some of the cues are mindblowingly beautiful. There is some nailbitingly intense action stuff on it too, the so called battle themes. Don't get me wrong, this is no poor quality midi music, just total symphonic power and brilliance.

I must say this is really growing on me of late. I've been giving it a few spins and found a new appreciation for it, probably now that I can forget about the hideous film (I know you liked it). The last two cues, Be With Me and End Credits Suite are really really good.

NP: Atlantis: The Lost Empire - James Newton Howard

I want more stuff like this from Howard in the future.

I didn't like Atlantis but considering I haven't played it for years maybe it's time to give it a another try, see if I can change my opinion?

    NP:E.T (williams)

One of my personal favoutires! Gorgeous stuff!

Perhaps his masterpiece over Empire Strikes back?

What kind of instrumentation is used in the opening credits?

Next I will play : Braveheart (Horner)

I'mnot a fan of scotish music, but the 2 main themes are superb ( Even If they could be copy and paste from some classical music)

NOooooooooooo..I want not start again the same discussion than we had about AVP requiem!

    dizzy

    NP:Bangkok Dangerous (tyler)

    That's much better.

I have weakness for Asiatic sound mixed with modern techniques. So that's why im enjoying it...

The action stuff sometimes seems more Rabin / Harry gregson Williams (Spy game) than Tyler, but he still manages to put his style here. the main theme at least, is not a rip off of anyone or it's not a typical MV power anthem, it's tender and effective.

entertaning ( at least the first 30 minutes or so)
  3. NP: Practical Magic (rejected) (Nyman)

First listen, and I feel safe in calling it one of his best. I see the main theme of The Claim was actually rejected from this score.

I always felt there was a touch of 'Skye Boat Song' and Simple Minds 'Belfast Child' in the Braveheart score but maybe it's just typical celtic music.

NP : EAGLE EYE - Brian Tyler

Been listening to this. IMO, it's a better listen than Bangkok Dangerous with a more dynamic ochestral presence. Its' amazing how much music was written for the movie. Anyone noticed the Crimson Tide/The Rock anthem popping up in the first track? It is nowhere to be found in the score.

Yup, it's staggering to think there's another 30 minutes in the movie. Tyler said there's between six and seven thousand pages of music! shocked

Sure is. One of Powell's best IMO, and the full score is a slight improvement on the official album. (Though not so much that it's a necessity over of the official album.)
