I found Steve Martin at his best in Father of the Bride, Parenthood and Grand Canyon. He can be a great actor if the conditions are right.

Steve Martin, IMHO, was at his all time best in Planes, Trains and Automobiles and The Jerk

    HE HATES THESE CANS!

Umm... doing a little research about the performers, The Portsmouth Sinfonia, I found this.

The Portsmouth Sinfonia was a real orchestra founded by a group of students at Portsmouth School of Art in Portsmouth, England, in 1970 — however, the Sinfonia had an unusual entrance requirement. Players had to be either non-musicians, or if a musician, play an instrument that was entirely new to them.

Their butchering of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" was no accident and they renamed the piece Thus Stuttered Zarathustra and has been performed by other orchestras.

The real question is which would you rather listen to... Thus Stuttered Zarathustra or Symphonette #2? BTW, check out the You Tube description of Symphonette #2. cheesy

He, he...that 2001 clip does indeed sound like a "performance" gig. It's almost as if you crossed the Strauss piece with the atonal music in the rest of the film (Ligeti etc.)!

Their "In the Hall of the Mountain King" by Grieg is pretty cute too:
