NP : Lyle Mays
Self titled album from Pat Metheny's keyboard player. This is great stuff from atmospheric piano pieces to the wonderfully evocative 'Alaskan Suite' which for me is the highlight of the album.
You know, I think you'd enjoy this Tom.On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

Oh yes, big fan.
At my end of year prom last month, I had the DJ play Wuthering Heights (took a bit of persuading) for my English teacher, as we'd studied the book in her lessons. She was very pleased and I found out she was a huge fan also. -

Are you talking about the Newman score? Did the DJ have the Bernstein box?

NP: Freefall (Chamber Symphony) (Christopher Gordon)
It's been great to hear two new works from this composer in one weekend. In his concert music, you hear a blend of his elegant, traditional voice with a post-John Adams minimalism. This is just the mixing desk recording of the work as it was performed by the Omega Ensemble in December last year. Sadly I don't think it will be released, something which is true of a lot of Gordon's concert works.
Next up: Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind (Golijov)A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

NP: Silk Road - When Strangers Meet (Silk Road Ensemble)
This is the first of the Silk Road albums, which now number three. (I have the first two, and have been meaning to get the one that came out in 2007.) There's almost nothing here not to like, from Sharav's piece based on Mongolian Longsong to Mamiya's 'Five Finnish Folk Songs' to Ali-Zadeh's 'In Habil's Style'. The Renaissance-inspired piece by Filippo Azzaiolo is a personal favourite from this album. Superb musicianship and unusual ensemble choices pervade the album.
Will move onto their second album, Enchantment, after this.
Also this morning: Slow Food (Elena Katz-Chernin) - Katz-Chernin is Australia's most famous female composer. This new album of solo piano works (featuring re-arrangements of some of her famous melodies) is a winner. Much like David Shire's Conversation music, this album flirts with popular tradition and classical elegance.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

So now we have Freefall and his Bass Trombone Concerto. Such a shame (at least for me) that Gordon doesn't put his material out.

You speak about it like it's his choice, which it isn't. Hundreds of commissioned works appear every year around the world, and never re-appear.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

The world revolves around me and I want when I want. Seriously, I'm sure the real thrill is to experience it live in concert.

Oh, I think if he could get a label to release it, he would.
Sadly I didn't see either piece live, so I'm going on the inferior mixing desk sound from the evening.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

There is a label in the Northwest part of the United States that is open to releasing material. PM me and if you know him at all maybe I could be of some help.

Good choices to the newcomer of Russian classical music. I would put 4,5, & 7 in the warhorse category.
