What's a gel?
I always thought it was the thing that's on top of cakes and such.
Or stuff you put in your hair to make it stand up.I am extremely serious. -

In science it's a substance used as a medium to separate the components of a given compound, like complex biomolecules (proteins, nucleic acids etc). -

Lovely gel Peter!
Thanks!
Miya wroteI did that kind of stuff a few times when I was an undergrad. My gels were messy!
I wasn't good at it.
Now my study is completely on macro-sclae (I'm doing behavioral ecology at master's course) so I don't do genetic analysis any more.
Wow, that's very cool!
Miya wrote
Are you going to study phylogeny?
Still undecided, but it will probably be some lab stuff. I'm kinda drifting towards gene technology these days, but phylogeny is still a possibility.
Miya wrote
Good luck and have fun with your future work!
Thanks, Eri, same to you!

That's the one! Agar comes from algae, and makes your cakes jellyish, your hair stand up and provides a medium for scientists to separate DNA and RNA.
Not that all gels are agar based, but it's a substance found almost everywhere.

Just worth noting that today marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin's On The Origin Of Species, on Thursday 24th November 1859...
God bless that man...

Don't forget that they were denying findings from astronomy centuries before they started denying biology. Geology was denied several decades before as well.
Denialism seems intimitely tied to religion, and is probably as old.

I've seen Prof. Nutt's input on quite a few BBC science documentaries, most notably a recent Horizon programme about the ranked lethality of the most popular recreational drugs. Rather interesting stuff. It's a shame his research has been dismissed like this. -

Many of you will have heard of biologist Professor Richard Dawkins. He will be receiving an honorary doctorate from my university tomorrow morning. I might pop along to see what's going on. -

Well, it was a great day! I arrived early with two friends and we were among six students unexpectedly invited, at the door, to come in and watch the ceremony. Afterwards, I even spoke to him and drank champagne with all the other graduates who were being celebrated!
Picture!

I'm the one on Dawkins' immediate right. (Shame about poor Judy on the end, who appeared to be far more interested in her shoes). -

Fantastic! Dawkins is awesome and it's so cool that you have this picture with him!
My first thought after looking at that pic was to wonder if that person to Dawkins' right was Stephen Fry in his younger days.

I'm pretty sure the university gave him that outfit. I doubt he goes around like that in everyday life.
I'm also sure that any people dismissing his position based on fashion sense are a lost cause anyway.

It's amazing how he keeps calm when debating on Fox News. His reactions when Bill is spewing phooey are just priceless!
