We used to feel that sonic boom all the time. All our windows would shake like crazy!!
I guess one of the perks about living in central Florida. Getting to see all the shuttles go up (it really lights up the sky ).
I was able to see John Glenn go up for his second round from the water right next to the space center.
And having seen Columbia go up for her last voyage, that was kind of eerie...
All of you need to come stay in Florida and see the Kennedy space center!!!! -

"Black hole found in Milky Way"
This may sound like an obvious discovery, but according to the article we now have "empirical evidence that super-massive black holes do really exist [...] beyond any reasonable doubt." (Hard to imagine what else it could be of course. But for now I'll assume they're right. ) -

Had to kill 3 test mice the other day, during my immunology course. Worst thing was that they were super cute and I wanted to smuggle them home in my pocket.
Being a science student isn't always fun and games.

My sympathies.
How did you had to kill them? Was it some kind of infection?http://www.filmmusic.pl - Polish Film Music Review Website -

We haven't had to do that in school, luckily. The closest I came was when we had to examine freshly removed leg muscles of cockroach under microscope. My classmates had fun mutilating the poor creatures, but I simply found a spare leg lying about, dissected it and prepared a slide. And my teacher showed it to them all
I'm going to join medical college next year so we probably won't have much to do with dissecting animals anyway luckily
I'm sorry, Peter! I can understand how that feels, being an animal lover myself -

Why would you have to kill them before doing tests, Peter?
I'm adamantly opposed against killing and disecting solely for abstract educational purposes (there's no reason whatsoever to not simply keep cadavers in the freezer if you really, really, really feel you need to do this in biology (in The Netherlands we don't and we seem to get by just fine)), but little as I know about immunology, I'm perfectly willing to concede there may be some greater purpose that escapes me: if any such undertaking is a step towards a greater quality of life, I'm all for it.'no passion nor excitement here, despite all the notes and musicians' ~ Falkirkbairn -

Demon, had it only been cockroaches, I'd taken pleasure from it. Alas, these mice were small, furry and playful. I found it very difficult.
Martijn, many on the course will probably go on to work in the medical industry developing new drugs or doing basic research to understand how life functions, which will in the end benefit us all as well. The purpose of such a course was to prepare people for how research is done out there. From working with radioactive and toxic substances, working with high tech machines, pipetting and calculating data like nuts, and killing and experimenting on mice. That's how the work is, and the reason why we have so much knowledge and so many fancy drugs today.
The good thing is that these mice lived perfect lives. I could tell they were happy and active little critters, and they had friends and houses and hay to play in. We were instructed to do our best not to stress them, and the killing was extremely fast and out of nowhere. That's how I want to go. A carefree life with plenty of food and friends, and instant death out of nowhere.
Now, try to compare this with..... industrial fishing for instance. You're dragged up in a huge net, get thrown in a huge pile of your friends and family to slowly suffocate to death, which can take from minutes to hours. That's just the worst possible deatht and no one seems to care. Something wrong with the priorities there.

I care.
I care that the world has to eat. And there's a LOT of people in the world.
But I would be prepared to pay $0.05 extra for my can of tuna if it meant they could do some research to find out a way to knock out the fish upon dragging it out. I agree that it's lazy just letting it die slowly.''The mandate, as well as the benefit, of responsibility is the ability to tell when one can afford to be irresponsible.'' - Me -

Guys, it's nature. No lion feels mercy when he has to mangle a deer or any smaller animal in order to survive. For the time being human is on top of the food chain; so...Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

But humans can choose not to kill and can survive without meat.
I eat meat, so I obviously have no problem with it. There may come a day when that's viewed the same way as we view racism today. Who knows? -

It's scary, yeah! But all medical students gradually overcome this fear as they practice it definitely. I'm sure (at least I hope) I will too! -

There's a lot of nutrition problems for the strict vegetarians my friend; it's not as simple as that, humans can survive without meat but it's not without implications. As a specialist for more info.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

Currently that holds true: a strictly vegetarian diet definitely requires nutritional additives to counterbalance the lack of (amongst others) proteins and iron. I have no problem at all with eating meat: we are at the top of the foodchain and -like it or not- that gives us the privilige of doing what we want to do.
I would agree though that being at the top also comes with the proper responsibility.
I would never put an animal's life or rights before that of a man's, but there's no reason at all we should be jaded or indifferent towards it: if an animal's life can be saved, or its quality of life increased without any detrimental effect to our own, there's no reason at all NOT to do it.'no passion nor excitement here, despite all the notes and musicians' ~ Falkirkbairn -

People eat more meat than they need to though... what's worse, they waste meat too. To put that differently, they kill an animal and then throw it in the bin or they throw up or whatever.
On a different note, if you ask children if they think eating meat is OK or not they argue that the meat is already there anyway and the animal has already died, so, why not eat it then after all? It's already dead anyway.
Hehe, the way kids reason.
Luckily when they get a bit older (or when they argue with me ) they start to understand the idea of consuming and market and everything. But some people never seem to get to that point of understanding unfortunately.
