Yeah - it just felt like (yet) another season of exactly the same stuff, a few years later. Only half as long.

It was OK I guess. I was expecting something a bit more spectacular.

The problem was it was half the length of a regular season

And it wasn't called 12? How confusing.

One of the only great genre films to come out of France?

I haven't seen it, but to be honest my experience with French action films of recent times, if I have the (dis)honour to watch them is quite awful!

Could you give me examples of *good* (not necessarily great) French genre films from recent times?

I think you might have missed my point, which is that the great filmmakers in France often aren't going after genre. When one of them did, the results were impressive. The genre in this case is gangster/crime, which is a genre the French do well. They actually gave believable foundations to a mythic rise.

As for 'good' (as opposed to great) genre films from France... Genre is a big word. Intouchibles for comedy, Taken for action (essentially a French film), Mesrine for crime, Tell Noone for thriller...
A butterfly thinks therefore I am
  2. I know that the French have a huge crime tradition, though sadly I saw only the remake of a certain classic (namely John Woo's The Killer), but aside from that, I have to say (OK, Taken was good) that my contact with French action films (Comedies are good, Intouchables was brilliant!) that the whole Europacorp production house with some exceptions (I'd add Danny the Dog, even if it takes place in London, but it IS a Besson production and a French director) is often abysmal.

I do know that the French greats rather don't go into genre cinema or at least transcend it, as it is in the whole European cinema.

Yes, they eat frogs and horses!
And their politicians are sex monsters.
And they sell war ships to Putin.

Luc Besson is a master at genre movies, although they've been hit and miss in later years.
    I am extremely serious.
  4. The stuff he wrote and produced (and had other directors) he was churning out a lot recently was to be honest quite abysmal at times (I saw only the third Transporter, but that... wasn't good. Taken 1 was really good, Taken 2 took the logic and heart out of it...)

    COLOMBIANA was great.

  5. I think it could have used a better editor, though the script was unusually good for that kind of fare.

Technically the last episode covered 12 hours. Like that was ever going to work.

Watch the other two, they're much much better.

Saw Guardians Of The Galaxy yesterday.
Such a fun romp. Great characters, humorous dialogue, cool visuals!
Has a bit of an eighties feel to it too.

I thought this was going to be a bomb but all reviews I've read have been positive. I think I'll see it.

Bring Me the Bread of Alfredo Garcia

Little-known prequel to the Peckinpah film in which a gang of vigilantes plots to steal Alfredo Garcia's home-made loaves.
  8. I bet it was the mention of Fielding that prompted that joke. wink

Yeah, I think so. It was in my Top 20 list of that year. Severely underrated revenge thriller.

Went and saw the Eastwood film Jersey Boys this afternoon and it was a pretty good film. The soundtrack was a lot of Four Seasons and Frankie Valli material but there were a few momenta where there was a little bit of underscore.
