  1. Are none of the top options offered by a Google search using "ibm ideascan 2000 driver windows 7" any use at all?

Nope. I've tried that and any number of variations thereof. Time to give up, I think.

But if anyone knows anything about that Windows 7/Windows XP difference, it would be cool.
    I am extremely serious.
  2. Can anyone recommend - free or otherwise - useful statistics software?

I don't use Excel so can't use the analysis pack it has and I cannot fathom how to add stats functionality - e.g. ANOVA - to Open Office Calc.

I also have a question. Is it possible for me to add a messageboard to my blog?

  3. Are there no helpful FAQ on the site your blog originates?

I am not sure a blog format site has much call for a messageboard so you may find that that option isn't catered for.

    Yes Pawel.

  5. Then I don't think they'd allow that, they just offer free blogs on their space.

You'd basically need a paid hosting space, Wordpress allows their template for free at wordpress.org

A message board is for free also PHPBB3 or Vanilla (the board that's used here on MainTitles) are some of the choices.

Can the 8 years of work be transferred?
    Will I need Wordpress anymore?

  6. Wordpress works as a CMS (content management system), so you can use it also on your website.

I'd have to take a look at the administration panel to see if there can be a database dump (backup) and I know where to check it out.

  7. Yes, you can make an export with all your posts.

If you do that, you can go through a "guided transfer" for 129$, but if you'd let me I could do that for you for free, unless you use some different plugins, but that's hardly an issue.

thanks for the homework Pawel. I'm going to get ahold of Bregt and Erik and see if I can buy some space from them. This looks all possible to me.

  8. Whoever can borrow you a decent hosting space is good.

Since Wordpress is so easy to install (I tried to do a website for myself once, under my own name, so I tried many content management systems, including Wordpress), that I can help out with it and no bother to look for anyone else smile

  9. The Wordpress check was easy for me, since I still have an old film review blog there, so it's easy to check out.

Help needed with a positive detection in Malwarebytes scan

I seem to be getting a repeated positive detection with the anti-malware software for "PUP.Optional.FrostwireTB.A". The location of the two occurrences seem to be the same:

HKLM/SOFTWARE/WOW6432NODE/MICROSOFT/INTERNET EXPLORER TOOLBAR/{...} where "..." is an alphanumeric sequence

I have removed it a couple of times but it seems to be recurring. I've just done another scan and removal in Safe Mode but haven't yet checked to see whether or not it is back yet - it's past 2am and I'll check tomorrow. The apparent recurrence suggests that the presence of this may be deeper and more difficult to remove.

There's a couple of things I'd like clarified in layman's terms that a Google search isn't really helping with.

    1) Is this PUP.Optional.FrostwireTB.A something dangerous? I'm not sure what it actually is and I don't seem to notice anything unusual happening in IE or any other browser and Malwarebytes talks about it being a "non-malware detection"

    2) If the scan tomorrow shows it as having re-appeared will I need to try a series of programs to dig deeper into my system to try to root it out? Related to this, should I check the box in Malwarebytes telling it to "scan for rootkits"?

Thanks for any peace-of-mind or help anyone can offer.

  10. I checked a German language board at avira.de . They say it's a remnant of the Ask toolbar that doesn't uninstall correctly. Adaware seems to do the job.

  11. Thanks for the help Volker. My problem doesn't seem to be related to the Ask toolbar - I am usually quite good at opting out of the crap that is bundled with free programs - even legitimate software comes bundled with this rubbish.

I seem to have resolved the problem by removing the "infections" by scanning with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware whilst in Safe Mode. I've also checked the box in the setting so that in future all PUPs will be treated as malware. I'll see how this goes.

  12. I have another issue - this time with my son's mobile phone. It's a relatively old (18 months) Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 (I think) and a couple of days ago it stopped browsing via the home wifi. Using the mobile browser is fine but when he tries to use the wifi, the wifi turns on but now all browsers he tries shows up as "connection failed".

I've tried everything I can think of including re-logging into the wifi system, forgetting the home wifi and rescanning for it, etc. I've cleared out all the rubbish on his phone and scanned with Malwarebytes' mobile app but that hasn't shown up anything weird. He uses anti-virus app as well. So I don't think that it's any infection.

The home wifi network has no issues as everyone else seems to be having no problems. The only thing I can think of now - before going back to the store - is to see whether David's phone can connect to another wifi network; either a friends' home wifi network or a general open network (but there's no open networks about here). I'm thinking that this would tell me if there's an issue with connecting to wifi networks in general or whether the issue is specific to our home network.

My question is whether it is possible that David's phone's ability to connect to a wifi network may be kaput - regardless whether or not his phone is showing that he is connected? I have a feeling that he is connecting but that his phone is unable to see that a connection is there. I can't seem to find any utility to help me fathom if the phone's wifi is knackered or not.

  13. Did he try any other application that actually uses an internet connection with the wifi?
http://www.filmmusic.pl - Polish Film Music Review Website
  14. Yes. The phone doesn't seem to want to update time and date or update the weather app. Access to Play Store and Samsung Apps Store doesn't work either. Or BBC News app, etc.

  15. Nope. No-one anywhere seems to have anything more to offer as a solution. Looks like I have to go back to the shop with the phone. Thanks for asking Tom.

I have a question to a solvable issue I hope.

I receive digital files from Naxos which I download and then burn a CD so I cn listen to my stand alone stereo system which has much better sound than my computer. The issue is it downloads to a single file not multiple which would allow me to pull individual files. Any suggestions?

  16. I am assuming the digital version is mp3 - use software to manually split file into separate tracks. Or rip the CD you made - would that separate the tracks? (Answering a question with another!)

  17. If it is an iso file (CD image) it will split into sepreate cues on CD when burned. Otherwise - as Alan said - you have to split them yourself.

  18. I have a little program called mp3DirectCut that I use to chop up and trim down mp3 tracks. Apparently it does this without any loss of sound quality when I save the edited mp3.
