Beyond the normal releases a soundtrack collector would get I don't have a lot of Barry.

It's a damn fine jazz album Tom, but it's nothing to do with film, done in a year ( 1976 ) when Barry took a year off from writing film scores. Unfortunately it's never had a CD release, a real shame; I think you'd really like it Tom.

Wild & Beautiful - Silly Wizard

This 1981 album is one of the better ones I know with one of Scotland's finest traditional folk groups playing and singing their sentimental hearts out. Lots of feeling, melancholy and some wonderful renditions of traditional (as well as proper) work. And not a bagpipe in sight!

The whole album is extremely enjoyable with reels and jigs popping up for fun, but for highlights the deeply wistful If I Was A Blackbird and the heartbreaking The Fisherman's Song are two of the most melancholic songs I have ever heard. It's rare that text, instrumentation and performance come so well together.

Oh, if I was a blackbird could whistle and sing,
I'd follow the vessel my true love sails in,
And in the top riggin' I would there build my nest,
And I'd flutter my wings o'er her lilly white breast.

I enjoy Hefti, Mandel, Jones, and Mancini who have all written outside the realm of soundtracks so I might very well.

I heard this played live, and since then it has never left my mind. The third movement is especially good.

The Grieg is not one of my favorite Piano Concertos. It is a little on the schmaltz side.

NP: BAK FASADEN.....MARK RAYEN This is an excellent first effort from a new Norwegian composer. The review copy has 30 tracks so put him in the category of Bernard Herrmann and Thomas Newman.

NP: Till Eulenspiegels Lustige Streiche - Richard Strauss

Gotta love the bumbling, awkward solo horn motif! biggrin Sounds like something you'd hear on Tom and Jerry or a show of that sort.

NP: Ein Heldenleben - Richard Strauss

I just noticed the reference to Till Eulenspiegels Lustige Streiche in the second-to-last movement. Kinda funny, especially when you consider that this work was written as a 'portrait' of Strauss himself!

Knowing Me, Knowing You - Alan Partridge

Only ever been aware of the television series, I just found out there was a radio series of the acclaimed worst chat show host in the history of public media (with the possible exceptions of Judge Roy Bean and Torquemada), played once again with verve and absolutely toe-curling embarassing perfection by Steve Coogan.

The legend spoke of this as "series one", so I'm hoping there may be more!

God, I love the age of the internet: this is the sort of mnaterial that in the olden days would only maybe have made my way if it had been released on record, and if an acquaintance (who would just happened to have an interesting in spoken word/audio drama material) would by chance have purchased it in the UK and brought it over to the mainland, where I would just have happened to notice it in a dusty old cabinet and wondered what it might be.
The stunning set of meshing coincidences by which I was introduced back in 1981 to the album edit of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy bears witness to being a mere pawn of destiny back then.

Nowadays, the world of popular media of whatever era is our oyster.
    I love it!
