I've never seen it performed with actual fireworks. You're absolutely right that that seems to be an embellishment (though why anyone would want to embellish a piece already featuring a Cossack choir, live cannon and church bells is rather beyond me!)

Simply because the piece isn't always performed with all those forces.

Spit In Your Ear - Spitting Image

Youngsters will not remember the British satirical program Spitting Image from the eighties, where current events were very sarcastically commented upon by puppets.
Though I certainly didn't hold with their blatant anti-Tory, anti-USA attitude, the puppets, voices and mannerisms were spot on, and when at their best, they were really sidesplittingly funny.

Obviously the puppet aspect doesn't carry over well to audio-only, but the gags and voices do, and they are highly entertaining, including such magnificent highlights as Steve "Interesting" Davis (snooker's top man at the time, seriously lacking in charisma, finds a nickname), the song "We've Got Beards" (a ZZ Top take-off), Trooping The Colour (Elizabeth forgot! Maybe Phillip would be so sweet to?) and many more.

It's an excellent and entertaining album...but I fear you do need to have been at least aware in the eighties to be able to really appreciate it now.

Yeah, I remember that show very well from my childhood. I think it was on Sky Channel in the mid 80's, and my family was one of the few fortunate in my class to have cable at the time. I didn't get the satire, nor did I understand everything that was said, I just loved the puppetry and the likeness of the masks to the real thing.
    I am extremely serious.

    Scream (Chris Cornell)

As a longtime fan of the singer / songwriter and his succesful ventures with rock bands such as Soundgarden and Audioslave it really hurts my ears and senses to hear this crappy hiphop / R&B style album. Constructed primarily by Timbaland, with Cornell's unique and instantly recognizable voice, the mix of the two just doesn't work. It's all good when you try to experiment in other genres, and address yourself to a new generation of music lovers, but this is too awful to listen to in one go. Basically every song sounds the same and there are no guitars, maybe a few times to accentuate the cheap electronics and beats. Listening to this I suddenly felt the urge to open my mouth and let all sorts of nasty and vile stomach contents loose on the floor. In other words... avoid if you expect anything resembling Cornell's previous work.

One star for Chris' voice which sounds great if its not covered up in stupid electronic effects.

Many times of course the bells and the cannon shots are replaced by the percussion in the symphony.

Exactly Tom! I've also heard of recorded cannon fire being used in performances.

Mercury Records was the first company to actually record the canon in the 50's. It is Antal Dorati conducting the Minneapolis Symphony. It was also Antal who because of a young people's concert introduced me to classical music at the age of 11!

A groovy 12+ minute track that just brightens any day!

If you've not heard this then there's a hint of what's to be had from this short clip here:

NP: PIANO CONCERTO...Ferdinand Ries. My first real exposure to him and it is a good one. The concerto was his 7th and composed in 1823. Very smooth flowing. The playing is technical sounding and definitely from the Beethoven era but not really like him.

It's weird to find myself listening to music I thought I'd never listen to. All because of Zumba.
Yes, I'm still enjoying Zumba a lot and I made my own Zumba playlist at home. I'm most surprised I even enjoy the Reggaeton, because that's not my kind of music at all. But hey, it's the dancing that makes it fun! So when I play it at home I simply have to keep moving. This is the playlist so far:

Livin la vida loca - Ricky Martin
Shiki Boom Boom - Jody Bernal ft. Baychev
    Rakata - Wisin & Yandel
No te veo - Jowell & Randy
    Single Ladies - Beyoncee
    ZuBailaito
Run the show - Kat DeLuna
    Zamba Zumba
    Dansen - K-liber
    Bailamos - Fergie
    Mary Jane Shoes - Fergie

Not as much as I would like actually. shame

His Festive Overture (from the excellent Summon the Heroes album) is a very personal piece of music to me. I did have a couple of Shostakovich albums on my hard drive before it died... so some suggestions wouldn't go amiss. cheesy
