I'm curious what this one's like?
As it states "new" I'm guessing it's NOT another same old tired complation of Ironsides, Peter Gunns and I Spys, is it?
Not at all. Farrrrrr from it.
Consider the track Timber is also on this compilation and the other tracks blend nicely in different ways with it. One or two tracks I didn't care for but it's a worthy CD.On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

Jeff Wayne's The War Of the Worlds.
Majestic, apocalyptic and still so powerfull and engrossing after thirty years.
Arguably the best concept album ever.
Forever Autumn and The Spirit Of Man still move me and Thunderchild still gets me cheering and baying for Martian blood.
WHAT a piece of work this is.

NP : English, Cornish, Irish etc Dances - Malcolm Arnold
Fantastic, short pieces of music based on traditional folk tunes etc. I think many people would be surprised how many of these are very familiar, and I'm talking about their orchestrated form, Arnold's 'Dances' have been used many times in documentaries and various TV shows. On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

I actually have a concertante ballad of the theme arranged by Philip Lane. It is available on Chandos 9851. A small mono file of it.

I believe Tchaikovsky hated this piece himself, but it has certainly had an influence. These days, it mostly has a "Christmas" association, for some reason.I am extremely serious. -

Spit In Your Ear - Spitting Image
Youngsters will not remember the British satirical program Spitting Image from the eighties, where current events were very sarcastically commented upon by puppets.
Though I certainly didn't hold with their blatant anti-Tory, anti-USA attitude, the puppets, voices and mannerisms were spot on, and when at their best, they were really sidesplittingly funny.
Obviously the puppet aspect doesn't carry over well to audio-only, but the gags and voices do, and they are highly entertaining, including such magnificent highlights as Steve "Interesting" Davis (snooker's top man at the time, seriously lacking in charisma, finds a nickname), the song "We've Got Beards" (a ZZ Top take-off), Trooping The Colour (Elizabeth forgot! Maybe Phillip would be so sweet to?) and many more.
It's an excellent and entertaining album...but I fear you do need to have been at least aware in the eighties to be able to really appreciate it now.'no passion nor excitement here, despite all the notes and musicians' ~ Falkirkbairn -

Another interesting association in the US is the playing of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture on July 4th. This piece to the best of my knowledge has to do with Russia/Napolean.

Loved this show. And the amount of famous comedians who voiced the puppets and later became household names in their own rights...Steve Coogan, Rory Bremner, John Sessions, Chris Barrie, Harry Enfield, Jon Culshaw....the list goes on..........On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

Did they have fireworks in the 1860's? I know they had the canon shots plus the church bells were synchronized to ring throughout the city.

I was actually talking about the cannon.
I've never seen it performed with actual fireworks. You're absolutely right that that seems to be an embellishment (though why anyone would want to embellish a piece already featuring a Cossack choir, live cannon and church bells is rather beyond me!)'no passion nor excitement here, despite all the notes and musicians' ~ Falkirkbairn
