Perhaps (and bare with me here) because it's too obvious a choice?

You're probably right. It's weird, but it's true. I rarely listen to any of my very favourite scores, now I think about it (Star Wars, To Kill a Mockingbird, Spartacus, Viva Zapata, Ben-Hur). Illogical, captain.

I like to savor them. I tend to only listen to my favourite scores when I can give them my full, undivided attention. Listening to a great score should be like reading a great novel.
  1. I was pleasantly surprised by The Guys - Mychael Danna last night when my computer was shuffling soundtrack albums while I was in the kitchen. It hasn't had many listens by me yet, but the violins solos and Annie Lennox's voice are beautiful. Any other thoughts?

You're talking about that movie with Anthony LaPaglia and Sigourney Weaver about a journalist helping a fireman to write obituaries of his men lost to 9/11? That was a good score. And movie.

Oh yes! That's exactly how I feel... I know I shouldn't put on Empire Strikes Back, or Braveheart, or Poltergeist if I'm feeling tired or just not feeling well. I should do it when it's the right time, which it hardly ever is. It's dependent on my mood, and most of the times, my brain gives me the signal to get listening to one anyway: if I start hearing a particular theme in my head or I start singing a melody I know I'd better put it on fast. But in the case of the really great scores it happens not frequent enough.

Just played: Blade Runner orchestral arrangement (Vangelis)

A very peculiar score, but nicely redone with an orchestra. I've always like the synthy rhythmic end title cue in the movie and I'm glad it's preserved here. Twice in fact. And the love theme is always nice to dream away by.
And it's a perfect example of what I described above. I was humming music of it earlier today, so it was only logical I put this on. smile

NP: Battleforge - Tilman Sillescu / Alexander Röder / Alex Pfeffer

Dramatic first 2-3 tracks on this really gets things going. Driving ostinato strings as well as some growling choral sections provide some of the best listening so far this year.

BTW, it's a game score and sounds orchestral.

Here's a link to a short video on the music - it'll begin after 10-15 secs of advertisements:

Especially the last jam is crazy.

Wow! I almost did this joke!Dammed, you are faster.

I never will be tired to say that: Zimmer's top notch adventure score. My favourite score by Him. All the Good Zimmer is in this 90 minutes!

I was Playing: The water horse (Newton Howard)
Im not a great fan of celtic music, but this score has some kind of magic.

    NP:War (tyler)

I never could finish my liste, so I will try now.

I still thinks the same about Brian Tyler music, but today I wanted to listen something loud mixed with electronics. And If you want something loud....there are 3 composers: Silvestri, Arnold and Tyler. tongue

JOHAN SODERQVIST - After the Wedding

Sensible and tender scoring, melancholic and melodic in core, minimalistic and honestly humane approach to music. Nostalgic soundscapes and beautiful usage of the string orchestra, this score is one of my favorites.

  4. NP:(2008) Rob Lane - Merlin

Just checking this score out for the first time.

I've seen promos for this miniseries on BBC but I've grown tired of these kinds of King Arthur incarnations so I'm not planning on watching it.

The music shows Lane's skills but it's not a classic I think. It's solid, decent adventure filmscoring with some hints of comedy here and there. Overall it reminds me sometimes of James Horner, Trevor Jones and Joseph LoDuca, but overall it's too generic of a score for my tastes. Trevor Jones' take on Merlin miniseries is far superior (killer themes! punk ) so I'll stick to that one.

That said, I will be checking out any possible future scores by Rob Lane: maybe he's just getting started and still needs to flex his filmscore muscles smile
