I'm curious about CHRISTUS. People talk about Frisina as having the religious sound I crave so much, but I haven't heard anything of it in his music so far.

Depends on what you've been listening to.
As for that religious sound*, have you checked out Giovanni Paolo II (Pope John Paul II)? If the main themes are too regal then perhaps the tender underscore-ish ones might be what you're after.

    Thoripedia-
religious sound: a particular kind of sound that Thor likes and associates with man being reverent and in awe of an all powerful entity (nature, god, flying spaghetti monster). Like pornography, the sound cannot be precisely defined but Thor knows one when he hears one. Numerous attempts in track suggestions by puzzled colleagues have all been dismissed as being overtly religious. Leading psychologists opine that since only Thor can identify this sound, he is either peculiar or a genius. However, Thor believes that he is both.

Please let me know what you think of Hawking's Universe?

I'm listening to Stephen Hawking's Universe at the moment and I'm quite enjoying it. There's certainly an orchestral feel to the score with the use of the 56-piece orchestra but it is supplemented by a significant amount of additional sound design - that's not too intrusive.

The score is certainly a strings, brass, percussion score that's full of driving rhythms rather than glorious themes. The electronic additions tend to be subtle textures or help drive the string-led rhythms.

    Certainly worth a listen.

[Edit] Listening to "Alien Ocean" there's a definite Murray Gold/Doctor Who or Ben Foster/Torchwood feel about it.

It has my interest, I heard some of Silent Witness and quite liked what I heard.

    Thanks for the info Alan.

  1. Yes, I liked what I heard from Hawking's Universe, that I contacted the composer over it. Never heard back, but a few days ago I got the surprise e-mail it was up for order. Sadly, there are some many limited editions and worry about what may be next, coupled with my recent job loss (again -- my contracted boss got fired, so there went my job), that I just can't afford to but once in a blue moon buy regular releases.
While good intentions on the major label's parts, "the road to hell is paved with good intentions", and they've cornered out the commercial market for folks on a budget.
In fact -- still ranting here -- I found that just today I noticed that for the very first time, a limited edition cornered out another special release (unlimited), so now the limited edition market is cornering out it's own market. The snake is eating it's own tail. Nummy!

  2. I'm sure that if times were not so bad I'd be buying more CDs than I am doing. I'm grateful for the availablility of mp3 downloads as I'm willing to trade off the sound quality (though I don't hear much difference) and lack of physical CD against saving on cost and saving on shipping allowing me to still get a reasonable amount of recent releases (both mp3 and CD, the latter tending to be from FSM, Intrada, Varese Club, etc).

I would personally prefer that labels would release less frequently though.

  3. A mixed bag today:

Attack of The 50ft Woman - Ronald Stein
Quite a short representation this, filled out with short pick-up and loop tracks. But great B-movie fare!

    Bruc - Xavier Capellas
Left this one for a more concentrated listen later on today.

Darksiders - Mike Reagan / Chris Velasco / Scott Morton
Picked up the extra tracks that make up the recent "Director's Cut" release of this. Now a 75-minute score as compared with the original 50-minute release. Extra tracks add much about the same to what's already available.

Season of Mists - Gavin Bryars
Melanchonic score this one from a Russian film (I think) from last year. String trio and piano-based scoring from a composer I have heard off but from "classical" side of the road.

    The Tempest - Elliot Goldenthal
I just had to have a new Goldenthal score - it's been a while. Listening to it now and it doesn't sound as bad as the clips suggest! The vocal tracks seem quite integral with the score so they are not too bad and the atmospheric wash that are the tracks "Alchemical Lightshow" and "Rough Magic" are worth hearing in their entirety. And if I just think of the rest as being outtakes from Heat and Titus then that's fine!

  4. Darksiders is pretty good. That main theme alone is epic!!!

  5. One of the knock on effects of this time of year is that expected delivery dates from the likes of SAE can't be relied on. It usually takes 7-8 days for a package from them to arrive. At this time of year it can take any amount of time.

    Just arrived:

FLESH + BLOOD - Basil Poledouris
    FAMILY PLAN - John Williams
    BLACK SWAN - Clint Mansell

    punk

And ordered last night on eBay, a sealed version of James Newton Howard's THE LAST AIRBENDER for a pretty reasonable price (€ 30,-, incl. shipping). So I broke my promise to myself not to buy anything new lately... hmm.
