Something Wicked This Way Comes - James Horner

Boy, Horner could do no wrong in this phase of his career. This is just brilliant.

    Star Trek Michael Giacchino

There's very little 'meat' to it, there's no sense of storytelling to this score, just a bunch of action cues with pretty much the same theme repeated throughout (with a few variations here and there). An enjoyable theme for sure, but not Trek-worthy in my opinion. (But then, to be fair, the film itself is such a departure from past Trek films, I'm not surprised with the score Giacchino wrote.)

As well as a lack of narrative in the music, the score is also lacking in a sense of awe and grandeur that any good space adventure score should have. That's the most disappointing thing for me, as I was hoping for some proper sci-fi music from Giacchino.

Having said all that, I still find this to be a very exciting score and an enjoyable listen on album. (This is pretty much the love child of MI3 and Speed Racer.)

Your tears inspire me to disagree with those judgments...

"Lacking in sense of awe and grandeur"....I don't see how anyone could say that the climactic action cue "Nero Death Experience" is lacking any such thing. It's quite possibly the most epic film cue that Giacchino has done so far, and it works in the film too. Not only that, but the oft-commented-on "Enterprising Young Men" as well as the entire end credits cue are full to the brim with grandeur. The choral renditions of the Courage theme are simply incredible

As far as "just a bunch of action cues"... going through the album in order I count...

Suspense: 3 (Star Trek, Nice To Meld You, Does It Still McFly?)
Drama / Emotion: 6 (Labor of Love, Hella Bar Talk, Enterprising Young Men, That New Car Smell, To Boldly Go, End Credits)
Action: 6 (Nailin the Kelvin, Nero Sighted, Run and Shoot Offense, Nero Death Experience, Nero Fiddles / Narada Burns, Back from Black)

Even if you disagree with some of my categorizations, it really cannot be said that this score is just a bunch of action cues...
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!

It may not literally be a bunch of action cues, but that's what it feels like. Wouldn't have said it if it didn't.

And I can think of far more epic scores than this one. It just doesn't do the vastness of space justice - a requisite of any good space adventure score IMO.

But now your words will make it feel that way to me too, and I don't want it to feel that way. People's opinions have too much effect on my own...

i should just stop reading this message board then, right? smile

Well, don't let anyone tell you differently if you think something else Matt...I certainly don't want you to leave the board. I'm only more than likely to agree with Steven's opinion because his taste in Trek scores tends to mirror my own.

I'll still be getting the score and making and giving my own opinion soon.

Oh I am not actually thinking of leaving the board...just meant to point out the obvious fact that if I really wanted to form my opinions in vacuum, then that is what I would have to do...but I can't and wouldn't want to...

Star Trek isn't brilliant, but it's better than any of his tv scores, surely?

I wholeheartedly agree, there's just not enough mention of A&D and surely James Southall's review is long overdue....when it comes we'll all be wanking a plenty.

I won't be doing Star Trek till I see the film. As an album, I like it, but it's a low-to-midranking effort in a series which has benefited from two of the all-time-great film scores and a couple of others which are first-rate.

As for Angels and Demons, I won't be seeing the film, but I've only listened to it once so it will take a lot more listens before I can really pass judgment. On that first listen it sounded quite entertaining, but a big disappointment after Da Vinci Code. It's so unbelievably simplistic and cheap-sounding, I assume Hans probably wrote it himself.
