    I just saw the Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
    It was very interesting.
    And very beautiful to look at.

    ... I think I'll buy this one.

    A while ago I recorded Alien vs Predator off the tv. I can't really remember why. Anyway, I haven't quite found the strength to watch it until tonight. Why didn't someone tell me how funny it is? What a riot! And what a load of tripe.

    Tripe is about right!

    Talk about de-mystifying a whole franchise, though to be fair the whole Alien thing went down the pan with Alien 3 onwards.

    Great fun in a brainless way.

    I would say 'after Alien 3 onwards'. ALIEN 3 has always seemed a strong movie to me. (Especially when one considers how disastrous it could have been.) Fincher did pretty well for someone coming on late in the game. (As point of comparison, compare the workmanlike direction of Brett Ratner, assigned at the last minute to XMEN 3.)

  6. I'd agree with you, Michael. The whole setting does make for a starkly different movie from Cameron's rollercoaster ride. As well as the work that Fincher did with the movie, I think also that a lot of credit can go to Goldenthal's wonderful score.

    Although some of the chase-me-chase-me music is, for me, a bit too much sound design, there's an emotional punch to the rest of Goldenthal's score that hits the mark.

    I also quite liked Alien 3, though I haven't watched it for a long time. It's flawed, but extremely well-made.

  8. The one thing that bothers me about ALIEN 3, apart from the fact that monster isn't presented in a very scary way in most of its scenes, is the fairly extreme language quotient in the film. They went a bit far there.

    Oh, my, God. What trash. 2 hours of guys in a room with flash lights...they hear a noise...something finally jumps out and kills one of them...a brief fight ensues...they enter another room...with flash lights

    ...and it just goes on! cry

    The only redeeming quality was Rosamund Pike. slant

    The language didn't bother me and added to the realism of a prison colony.

    The film looked good, it has atmosphere ( yeah yeah I know ) but I felt it had been sold down the river, it was like everything that had happened in ALIENS was all for nothing with Newt dead and Ripley impregnated....a cheap shot as far as I was concerned.

    On the plus side it was this film that made me sit up and take notice of Elliot Goldenthal.

    It does Sigourney a bit more to do as an actress than play surrogate mother all over again. Now she's grieving mother and widow. And inseparably connected to the monster. That feeling of grief is something I respond to the most in the film, and it's so rare for a franchise sequel to focus in on a feeling like that.

  15. The whole Alien saga is my favourite set of movies, apart from the original Star Wars of course... But really Alien 3 is a standout movie in its own right... They decided not to go horror / action / suspense again, and there are some gruesome developments in this one that just do the Alien universe justice, the feeling of dread and hopelessness is very obvious when you immerse yourself in Alien 3 and I really like that, I like the fact characters are put in desperate situations and the end is not at all clear or hopeful. It seems to me people who really like this movie also like the score, which IMO is so chockful of ideas and ambience it really adds another level to the creepiness of Alien 3. And of course I would love to see Jim Cameron do another one in the series, as his level of expertise will make it an instant hit. Aliens remains my most loved film and my most viewed film ever.

    Sorry, but Alien 3 is a step backwards with most of the film being a retread of the original and failing.

    I felt the whole thing should have gone in an entirely different direction, there was no need for Sigourney to come back, that chapter was closed. I'd have liked to see some writer(s) take it in a whole new and imaginative direction but hey, it's Hollywood and that rarely happens! slant

    I mentioned the score earlier on this thread D. I agree with Alan that some of it is very 'sound design' like and doesn't make a good listen on album. Still, there's lots of great music there too and as I've said elsewhere, seeing this film at the cinema was the first time I sat up and took notice of Goldenthal.

    Hmmmmmm. Not sure why this movie is heralded so much. Sure, quite a great movie! But to be called like thebest movie of all time in so many lists, or even being the number 2 in IMDB's Top List...?

    Also the score disappointed me in the movie.
    I didn't watch it in the right mood perhaps?

    I saw this movie years ago when I had my own radio program and I was invited to the premiere.

    I thought it was the second worst movie I ever saw ( afer toys)

    Now I re-watched it in television...and it's not the second one.

    it's...the worst movie ever made. an embracement for any guy in the planet

    I kind of enjoyed Battlefield Earth, maybe it was because I'd been told by everyone who had an opinion about how awful it is.

    Having said that I have no intention of ever watching it again.....there might be subliminal scientology brain washing crap in it wink
